What is a hacker anyways?

category: general [glöplog]
I am wondering first. That guy who wrote manifesto. Is he a hacker like in the old definition, say hobbyist programmer? Or like the new definition, security breaker?

What is the meaning of the manifesto?
When they say they are not criminals?

- Do they mean "I was a hobbyist programmer calling myself hacker, I don't have anything to do with the cyberanarchists, nothing todo and they confuse me?".
- Or do they mean "Ok, I was into security breaking, cyberanarchist thing, but this is not bad. We don't want to harm, we are just doing it for the "good" reasons".

That guy ment0r, which one of the two categories is?

When people refer to the manifesto, do they refer to good security breakers and bad security breakers or hobbyist creative programmers versus security breaker as a stupid attitude at all?

When I say I don't like the hacker mentality they tell me I am stupid because the pioneers did the stuff I am using today. But they meaned to respect the computer programming hobbyists just like me and us in the scene. Yet when they say "hacker", they don't mean these hobbyist but the new trend security breaking, defacing sites, etc. A completely different thing.

When I try to explain things, they say, ok the cyberanarchists are also very good at programming. If they are so good, why have a narrow activity of senseless internet attacks all years and not do a lot of other creative stuff?

And I find out that even supposedly big names like Kevin Mitnick, Gary mcginon and others, didn't need to know programming to hack a site or something.

It's something completely different. But when I read the hacker manifest or even when I read the new phrase "hackers not crackers" isn't the meaning confusing? For example some say hackers=hobbyist programmers & crackers = security breakers. Others say hacker = good security breakers & cracker = bad security breaker.

Ahhh...

p.s. The other question is: Why do I care so much?

What is the problem? Words change their meaning over time, or how do you explain "democracy"?
Optimus, you need to watch more movies.

Trinity's so far the only fictitious female hacker who's done an nmap portscan to employ the SSH CRC-32 buffer overflow exploit (Matrix Reloaded). All the other ones have, to a greater or lesser extent, merely signed into AOL and typed smileys.

So does that make trinity any more real?
