Info about sceneart history

category: general [glöplog]

Hello all. Just wanted to ask, if anyone has information, opinions etc about sceneart history?
I'm interested how uniqueness of scene art was formed, what trends were in sceneart 15-20 years ago, who had influenced this style, etc.
Thanks in advance!

music wise: rock&pop, italo/hi-nrg disco, acid/techno, hiphop, drum'n'bass, idm.

although I still believe that the late 80ies/early 90ies amiga music scene spawned a very unique musical style that doesn't really fit into any of those categories.

(ok, the 64 scene was probably first, for the records)

the_Ye-Ti, yep, viewed this site long time ago. It shows that period, when technique of pixeling was more important, than originality. Also, gfx tablets weren't in mass use in that times, and painting with mouse is much harder than modern brushing with wacom)

80s ascii -> ansi -> hirez
90s 16colors deluxepaint -> 256colors grfx2 -> photoshop
2000s photoshop vs 3ds -> vector shit -> death of gfxscene

also check out dreams2 cd gfx collection
and jason scott's bbs documentary

should be more then enough to get you started answering all of those questions without all the biased bullshit that everyone and their mother will post in here to derail you from your quest to determine the point of tits and dragons.

Thanks, ps. Gfxzone was great site years ago.. Will check out other info, about documentary and gfx collection.
Actually I'm planning to do seminar at upcoming Chaos Constructions party, theme will be "scene art history". That is why I'm trying to gather some additional info.
I agree with your scheme, it reminds me my own way (started at mid 90's - zx spectrum art, than ppaint/dpaint on amiga, and then moved to photoshop on pc).
For this moment I have my own opinion about origins and style of scene graphics, but it's a russian view. And probably you know, that we were always distanced from european scene. That is why I'm asking people here - to hear more opinions from people.

well.. there is not much sceneart history after 2005 anyways. so you arent missing much from gfxzone fading out around 2004. the graphician demoscene comunity kinda died out during that period. talented folks moved on to focus on their work. newbies stay on deviantart and such kind of comunities and end up never hearing about demoscene. so, most demoparty gfx compos mostly suck nowdays (compared to what they used to be) and no one of the coders/musicians guys really pays much attention to them anymore (similar to music compos actually). even in demos the graphic quantity has severily gone down compared to what it used to be in the 90s and early 2000's.

im just generally speaking ofcourse. still a few active talented folks around doing stuff.

and btw, russian views on the evolution of sceneart would be quite interesting to read, if you ever bother writting a proper article about it, would be cool to see it.

Raynoa, it's not worse to have it being about your view and experience on the subject, rather than trying to give the absolute and complete truth (which noone can do anyway).
neway, good luck with your seminar!

btw can anyone tell about sceneartists nowadays?
I mean personal sites, etc.
For example, Lazur ( http://lazur.biz ) is designer at commercial television network, Made( http://m4de.com ) is freelance illustrator, Henning Ludvigsen(Bridgeclaw) ( http://www.henningludvigsen.com/ ) is art director at gamedev studio.
Can anyone continue list?=)

the_Ye-Ti: Many thanks for posting that link, I actually didn't know about that gallery and since I'm no Boris Vallejo-expert it's good to have handy when watching old pixeled stuff :)
