Joke demos at Breakpoint

category: general [glöplog]
biggest cudos to Metalvotze for beating all the big groups' asses
now _that_ was my personal highlight at bp
I am still laughing.. the scene is like high society. and metalvotze came naked into a restaurant , or something like that. the high society is immediately shocked and wants to vomit. :D

elend: the 'high society shocked and vomiting' -stuff is not because of this one incident but because of the dozens upon dozens of such cases throughout the history of the scene... it does get rather annoying after ten years =)

Elend: It's called attention seeking, and it's often reserved for those who have nothing else going for them. :)

It's something more than this. Demoscene is a role playing game or a micrography of reality. Whoever understands that it can decide which of the funny roles to play and enjoy annoying the serious sceners who are stuck in their role. Shanethewolf did it, Stefan and the others did it, Metalvotze does it (but unintentionally by winning accidentally, then enjoying the responses of the whole scene). Today, it's more interesting to me to observe what happens when such people join the playground called scene (or various demosects at times ;) and hear the reaction of every scener. Sometimes it's funny and the Metalvotze incident is very funny and interesting to me now. I will keep reading your discussions.. ;)

p.s. "High society.. naked into a restaurant" hahaha, I like this description :)

I think It's pretty disrespectful to any person you may or have met in the scene to call the demoscene a "role playing game." At least I don't have the sensation the people I know in the scene are "acting." (At least not any more than in this great greek tragedy that is life)

Hahahaha, yeah catching attention, and all those others that long for the 1. place, what are they doing? Don't tehy also want to kick ass with a cool production? :-) The arguements get rather poor, but the more i like it, hahaha (comes close to our level, hahaha)
It is so simple: We pissed in your district, and now you are pissed. Why is it so hard to accept what has happend? Live is going on, as wel las our style, with and without a first place.
fakerVOZ: you still think this iis only about you guys? now talk about arrogant...

finally BreakPoint = TheParty
lot's of teens drinking beers and voting for a penis
BreakPoint is not the best demoparty of the year, it's just a place where alcoolics germans discover for the first time a penis on a big screen ... scene is dead?
i agree the winnerdemo isn't much fun when you don't understand german.

BUT if you really prefer demos with only a single 2d effect or demos that try to be arty and in fact are plain boring too, go on namevoting. the other demos just were plain sh*t. \o/ sorry.

Your opinion pigpen, just your opinion. I thought there was a couple of gems.

zone: The only thing is that the teens were doing the serious stuff and the alocoholics were more like twice the age of a teenager..

I have noticed that it sounds disrespectful to people, to even generally say that the scene is an RPG without mentioning any particular names. Sometimes I feel it and so I avoid saying that. However it's just interesting for me. I am wondering why is this happening? Probably because the scene is a part of our personality, our lifestyle (yes!), so saying that it doesn't exist hurts the meaning of our existence inside it. Most people deny that and just say that the demoscene is their source of creativity or simply their life. I can't disagree..

I could better say it in a diferrent way: The demoscene is a role playing game in the same way as reality is too. The diferrence is that you can take it less seriously than real life. The other diferrence is that it's more real than an imaginery board RPG :). Now alligorically, you have to really bear the sword and kill the dragon, not just throwing some dices and imagine everything in your head. In reality, you have to do some real life work in front of the computer in order to get a better position, but the rest of it is a role playing game.

I think that the scene is something between an RPG and real life, as it is something between a hobby and a job (People need to find motivations to work hard and accomplish something, without that being a job). Some people can manage getting the attention (overboosting their role) without producing something hard, it's just a diferrent path and I think that I am here because I took things so seriously (I wasn't acting or if I was, I didn't knew that..) but now that sole truth helped me to take the scene less seriously.

I don't say that fact to disrespect anyone, I am just finding it very interesting (I think few other sceners had said the same thing before), being surprised how much it annoys some people..

..I think I better have to write an article about it. Or find and read the ones who were talking about it..

@uncle-x/mfx
Hahaha, is okay sweetheart, go on complaining about whatever then. But i guess at least those comments you and your groupmembers made on our production itself, is something adressed to us? ;-)
The ASM'03 winner demo was full of nerd jokes. But the BP winner demo was nothing but nerd jokes! So you should make nerd jokes to win? I don't think that such a demoscene appeals to the right people. (Who will be tomorrow's scener?)

If you have a few minutes, you can open ai-results.zip and dig up a few Hungarian parties from the 1997-98 era. Then we had a lot these funny releases. Even, there were so-called 'lamer demo' compos for them. But also normal compos were flooded with these jokes. The separated compo did not reduce but induce this hype (see Firg). Several groups did not even care to make real demos, they only made such lamer demos and they weren't really interested about 'real demos' at all.

The problem is not with being funny -- eg. Moppi demos are both stylish and entertaining at the same time. The problem with these joke demos that the demo makers don't care. "I could not make it good, so I'm making it funny instead". Well, sometimes one feels like making such a release, obviously! It's like letting off the steam. And it's harmless to the scene, if these compete with real decent demos, and the audience votes right.

A guy entered a bunch of releases at Scenest-Rage 1998 at different compos. All these prods were nothing but a simple print: 'Don't vote this, this is a crap'. He actually got a fair amount of votes! The voters didn't mind to spoil the results just for the fun. So that's when the audience does not care. This can deflect demo makers very simply: why making a decent demo when fake demos win?

Preselection could not be of any help. If the audience does not like quality demos then any preselection would just blur this problem.

So what we saw at BP is that demo makers (Metalvotze) didn't care and the audience didn't care either. That's a sign of decay. (As for Hungary: there were 1120 of us at Scenest-Rage 1998. At Function 2004, we were 45.) I'm sure that both the demo makers and the audience should really care. Please, all of you, feel extremely pissed off by the results at Breakpoint!

You should not say that "it's only for the friendship and fun". Demoscene is about the demos!

There have been times where demos have also been released besides any party, and people got votesheets with sendings for all kind of diskmags. Things changed, nowadays a lot of stuff is released at demoparties. But of course audience might be drunk then or wants to be entertained. It is a big difference to let thousands of people watch a demo silently at home or at a party with a big audience that will vote.
In the case of our demo, well we didn't care of what a demo has to contain and about the style. Coz if so it would have just looked the same as many other demos. We'd be the imitators. We just did it with a free mind, not bothering of rules and 'don't's and 'do's. Is it really a beginning decay or is it more a reformation? It is easy to say the scene gets more and more dead - for those who benefit from the former situation and for whom a reformation would mean work, or the loss of fame? It is the old game, like in politics, like in the scene. Some like changes and new things, others dislike. But there is always one fact: Without changes everything gets boring somewhen. The first few times in missionary position might be exciting, but after a while you might wish to have sex in another position, right?
bottom line: winnerdemo did bring some "fresh wind" to the scene, in the one or other way.
people who like it will be happy and the ones that don't feel pissed and maybe do something really good next time. can't wait to see next bp's pc demo compo
to (more or less) quote some "famous" magazine most of us know: "Please make cool shock to demoscene" ;)
now what makes you think YOU can have the bottom line, and not someone else such as, for instance, me??

"the audience does not care": I agree! I didn't cared and I do not care (even if I tried to vote right, that's what I did: ASM04, MFX demo, Lithuanian demo. I guess I was one of the few sober people during the compos :), I am one of those people and I find results funny :) Demoscene is about demos but it's a bout fun too. People don't care, I had seen people doing namevoting, but I didn't cared and I laughed at their actions, funny to see the results being spoiled by the people, I had a great laugh with that and feel fine,. I am such kind of a scener and there are more of us :)

I honestly believe it is technical excellence that distinguishes a good demo from a good animation. Of course i appreciate design, ideas, etc, but there is normally something that separates demos from the final fantasy movie or south park (both are excellent imho).

Yeah, Winnerdemo IS entertaining (well not for me, but i can see why it is for a lot of people), but so are the new (your-fav-artists-here) videos, yet i wouldnt call them demos or submit them to democompos.

That said, i think it was pretty misplaced as a prod. Here in Hungary, we had a different cathegory for this kind of stuffs, and the concept did work.

p.s.: i found the comment "we had to scale back the polycount in the inside-c64 scene because not everybody's got 3ghz CPUs" very amusing :-) 3d coders will know why.
