Alcohol addiction.

category: general [glöplog]

Perhaps a question that sceners can answer. I was wondering what is alcohol addiction?

I consider that I am addicted to food but not to alcohol. I really love food for it's taste, I eat and feel better, I eat more. Gyros, Kebap, Pizza, examining the fridge, etc. I just know that I have an addiction!

Almost a week ago, I went to a party (a real one). I drank 3 plastic glasses of whiskey just to get into the mood. I poured more amount of it and drank it faster than the others. I was in my crazy mood ("Hey girl! Your dress has nice plasma shapes!!!". My friend who knows the demoscene grinned, and tried to explain her what was I meaning), other were just in a social mood. They had drank 5 or 6 when I asked them. I wanted intentionally to get drunken as always..

But I don't consider this as alcohol addiction. I hate alcohol, especially whiskey. I just don't like it's taste. I was just too asocial and I also like to experiment with the state that alcohol brings me into. My friends where afraid that I will continue drinking till I fall down and they also kept me away of the balcon. Heh! As I would do anything. I stopped drinking because I would be in the funny state for 2-3 hours, so it wasn't necessary. And because I don't like alcohol and because I didn't wanted to get worse, there was no need anyways..

I think that those who had a real problem with alcohol, those who were addicted, they would continue drinking. They are not just going for the funny social state it brings them on. But because they really like the taste or smell of alcohol. Or something..

At least that's my theory. My friend disagrees. He says "When we say 'alcohol addiction' we mean addiction to the state that it brings us, not the taste itself". And then he says "Would anyone ever like drinks? It's a poison! We all drink it just to be a bit more moody.". So,. does everyone of us is a bit or more addicted to alcohol? Because everyone likes the state sometimes or at least during the first times he tried it. No! I think that alcohol addiction is addiction to the essence of it, no the state. So,. I am not really addicted to alcohol, I just have bad days and I want to forget. But I want to go now to the kitchen and get something from the refrigirator ;)

Mmm,.. It's bigger than I thought! (as always :P)

Optimus

p.s. Yes,. I am back ;/
p.p.s. Officially, after 1 month of silence. Unofficially, I broke the first rule (to not even read the threads) after 1 week. I posted as dark hero after 3 weeks. Who wins the free beers? Uhm,. it gets complicated now!
p.p.p.s. I will be back in a diferrent way I guess. And my secret plan. Mmm,. I have to think it over, code and organize. Don't worry, nothing spectacular but cool nevertheless..

The new Optimus days are coming. F34R!!!

"Addiction" sort of means having a constraint to do something as frequent and as severe as possible.
Did it happen to you that you really felt like drinking or you felt you would get sick if you didn't?

I don't think being an alcoholic has much to do with liking the taste. Anyway, you generally learn to like stuff more when you try it more... it's said that if you eat a kind of food 10 times, you will like it. With addiction its more like you need alcohol all the time... if you have a day without it you really need to have it, and will do almost anything to get it. I think alcoholics don't generally try to get as drunk as possible tho... just drunk.

Drinking Whiskey from a plastic jar is a sure sign that you do not drink it for its taste, but to get drunken. In fact its a sign of tastelessness.

And yes, there are people who drink Whiskey, Beer and Whine also for its taste. However I doubt that about Breezers, Vodka Bull and similar stuff.

whiskey from a plastic jar is simple blasphemy! (except at a festival where glass is forbidden ofcourse)

i definately like the taste of certain alcoholic beverages and i never actually drink 'to get fucking drunk' anymore (i used to do that when i was 15 or so).

addictions are good btw! (drinks coffee, lights a fag and has a cold beer at hand in the office)

i'm pretty sure that nobody craves the actual taste of alcohol (guess why it always has a different scent)

and what you called getting into your 'funny' mood - you just noticed that the way to alcoholism is a pretty neat one. :)

alcohol is the best drug since there it no future and no past only the present matters but it's a bitch to stop drinking. I wrote alcoholdiary for a few months listing how much I drank kinda like a trainingdiary and that kinda made me realize that I spent more time drunk than sober.

Optimus telling girls demoscene compliments is the fastest way making you look like an idiot. And no alcohol would nullify this effect.
So never ever try any of these:
"Your eyes has the most beautiful environment mapping i've ever seen"
"Your body has great spline shapes, would you hold it against me?"
"Are you animated using Catmull-Rom?"
"You look so great i'd say, only Amiga makes this possible!"

I really have to agree with stelthz!

I love red whine and try to make out the fine difference in the taste, though i'm nothing like an expert in that. And i never get drunk with red whine, there is other stuff for that. :)

Optimus: getting drunk, even if you drink as much that you won't be able to stand or would not be able to control the urge to urinate, is though not really nice, it's not alcoholism.

Alcoholism has nothing to do with taste or with mood. It's when you have to keep alcohol constantly ín your blood - and as soon as it's not any longer in your blood, you can't eat, you vomit, you can feel your heart stopping. That is acoholism. If you have to drink, even a little bit, every 6 to 12 hours, it's alcoholism.

I keep to a simple rule - i never drink alcohol on 2 days one after each other, and not on more than 2 days per week. Demoparties are an exception, i booze constantly. But then, i keep at least a month without alcohol.

My mother had been an alcoholoician, and this made me panically afraid of alcohol.

Basically, one girl was in love with me back then. She and some other girls made a party, i was the only male invited (!!!). I came. Then then she took out a bottle of Vodka and opened it. I felt the scent. I became sick and ran away, and refused to talk to her since then. Now it has changed, i can allow myself to get drunk and i'm still in control. But it's too late. Life has crippled my nerves. Noone can like such a freak as myself any longer.

And no, it's definately not alcohol. I started boozing only 2 years ago, and that never more than 10 times a year.

It all starts when after drinking for 6 years or so you start picking up more and more beers each and every evening on your way home in order to drink them in the very comfort of your own computer because elsewise you just know you'll end up being bored and eager to drink.

That's alcoholism.

hmm, i personally happen to know a few robots with a drinking problem.
it's not nice to look at them when they drink.
one of them always begins to dance when he has drunk too much again. he has a little green friend who always cheers him up to drink more and finds it really funny to observate him!!!!1 it's really not funny!!!!11

Interesting theories.

>addicted to pouet

Mmm,. that too perhaps. I guess, I'll have to figure out what is the addiction. I remembered my old Pouet days after this pause. Perhaps you observe things different when you stop something for a while. Well,. I don't know now, I see the old passions by posting the thread, wondering who will answer and what will say, today copying the little pieces of text and having the mood to answer. I have to think something but I don't know. Addiction to the internet? To Pouet? To the community? To my connection? Having nothing else to do on the net?

>Did it happen to you that you really felt like drinking or you felt you would get sick if you didn't?

Neither of them I guess. I don't really like drinking. I can stay without alcohol for ages.

>now just dont start spamming all the threads and comments with your personal problems again and we'll all get along...

This is an option, when I want to find an excuse for "The End.2".

>alcoholdiary

Haha! That's very good!!!

>whine?

wine perhaps, but then 'whine' seems very funny, like a drink that makes you crying out loud!!! :)

p.s. I think I wanted to say more (They just don't get out, damn! Or perhaps I don't feel that much anymore after 1 month of silence, wow!), but I can't make it. I have 0.70E at the netcafe now, so I'd say goodbye and I will try to MSN and contact some of you or you can send me email..
