SUNDOWN 2012 - 7-9th September - Budleigh Salterton, UK - Remote Entries allowed!

category: parties [glöplog]
there seems to have been a small fuckup with the voting/results, im pretty sure i only submitted one photo-entry.
not that it really matters, tho ^^

ok, watching the results made me wonder first about the few remote-entries having got delivered...then after rethinking a bit, i found the reason: if you work on something for a long time, you want the crowd-reaction live, not just semi-live, or as in Sundown this year "not at all, due to bad bandwidth" ! ;) sorry to say so, but having no stream doesnt help you getting more ppl attend next time! :/
wow.

you're going to have to wait a week+ for the live recordings anyway as I'm on vacation and there really is no stress-free upload link available to me while here on vacation.

Now don't get me wrong, but topy and sunspire did a live audio broadcast to the best of the possible ability with the situation at hand, and if Hoffman had not provided his mobile phone, we would have had none at all.

I"m sorry but this is my real feeling with posts like this that using ;) doesn't qualify you to make snide remarks or generally clear you from getting your point across without hurting the people who TRIED THEIR BEST to do something at all.

You self entitled sceners out there who moan and gripe in posts and IRC are not helping. In fact you make matters worse by making those that put their party time aside to do something for you feel pretty fucking glum.

The griping on IRC is so bad that frankly, scene, some of us are no longer going to give a damn. This goes for a bunch of times at other parties too.

This wasn't a rant, this was a 'bitch, please' statement.

So there are live recordings (with video?) of the compos that will be made available?
That would be a nice surprise for me, being able to hear the cheers (if there were any...) when my remote entry demo was playing! :)

yep, M0d videod pretty much everything I think, should be online when he's had time to encode everything I guess. think of it as a time delayed stream :)

This was the first party I've been to in a about 20 years and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Was great to meet some new people and to put some faces to names. Big props to the organisers and everyone who helped out to make the party a success. rc55, DotWaffle and the guys did a great job. Really loved all the live music too! Already looking forward to future parties and stealing more of Havok's toast at breakfast :)

Shame about the noise complaint :( Hopefully it doesn't impact future events.

wysiwtf: Yes, very sorry about this, basically two people were working on uploading remote entries to the party system and I assume we overlapped and uploaded your entry twice. Thank you for your entry though, we try to be as careful as possible but sometimes the odd mistake slips through.

Hardy: We actually did very well for remote entries this year - so the concern is not as big a deal as you might think. Sundown had around 71 attendees this year - we are still a small party. Our internet connection has improved significantly however due to the limitations of ADSL we just couldn't get the upstream needed to stream video. Of course if we could stream video we would! That said, m0d has recorded all of the competitions and works his ass off getting it all on-line with no recompense. I think that combined with having Scenesat at the party and getting the releases up quickly (also regarding the fact the orgateam is exhausted), to complain seems a bit unreasonable. I think the only reasonable solution is for you to visit the party in person next time. ;)

I don't want to fuel the fire but Hardy, stfu. I know you have been around for a long time, way before streaming was possible?

This was an excellent party and the best Sundown yet, I very much enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and Ruairi and his team did an outstanding job running the schedule and taking care of their visitors. The new table layout (facing horizontally towards the screen rather than vertically) was much better too. Also can't beat the cozy atmosphere that is Budleigh Salterton with the beach just a minute walk away from the party hall. So awesome to meet familiar faces again from previous Sundown as well as getting to know new people \o/

We did our very best to bring some party-feeling to all sofasceners around the globe through a live broadcast, however with a local upload speed of a whopping 0.3 mbit there was simply NO WAY to run a videostream. Remember Budleigh is pretty much in the middle of nowhere with mostly hills and seawater around it so this should come at no surprise at all. If you want to experience crowd-reactions live, you should come to the party, simple as that! :)

Recorded audio and video footage of the compos and live sets will become available before long but it requires a lot of editing and processing before it can be uploaded, m0d is currently on holiday so please give him and others some time to rest and I'm sure you won't be disappointed by the quality recordings he's done.

So thanks again to everyone who made this possible, deffo count me in for Sundown '13 if it happens (of course it will!) :D

Oh and a biiiiiiig thanks to m0d and Silverlance for the fantastic nightbacon experience at the beach, not only did you feed us tasty bacon, you also brought along big chunks of firewood on saturday and the weather was perfect too!

Actually, the internet speed at the party place was about fifteen times better than at our "hotel" \o/

That was a fantastic party, huge props to rc55 and the orgas for making it happen. Best party I've been to so far :) Also, the guy I brought with me (vince) had never been to a demoparty before, had pretty much zero idea of what the scene is about, hadn't even really watched any demos beyond a few I've shown him in the past. He wants to go to more parties now :)

Big props too to the angry scottish guy (what was he called again, grillex?) for opening his seaside bacon stall at 3am for us, devistator for passing a bottle of fine champaign around, and xwize for his awesome welsh batman impression :D Oh yeah, and hoffman, naturally!

hmm, seems i sounded like moaning/too_harsh. i was just thinking about this and wrote what came to my mind. so i guess i just hit a wound point or sth. was not intended to be that big of a critic, should have got a helping comment originally. i better shut up now, before i get understood even more wrong.
This party has been my best sofascening experience ever.

Scenesat + cgi's webcam feed + irc = awesome.

Hardy: No worries bud! If Budleigh gets Fibre we'll definitely stream in the future.

Everyone: I'm happy to say that on further discussion with the council we've learned our lesson and they were very understanding with us and said we are welcome to return next year if we wish!

I also returned to the lady who was most affected by the noise and I bought her a large bunch of flowers to demonstrate how sorry we were about the noise. She couldn't have been more kind about it and we had a chat about multilingual things and I told her more about the event and she wasn't against the idea of us doing it again as long as we were on our best behaviour.

What a relief!

Anyhow yes, great party! Will see you all again soon!

hardy; don't worry about it -hugs- :)

rc55; great news mate!

Thanks to -everyone- (that's everyone at and remote from the party, looking in via the scenesat broadcast and subbing entries) for making this years' one such a lovely event, especially RC55 for putting the show on! Syphus for making me laff while we were fiddling with various old compo machines behind the desk and Devistator + HeavyStylus + H0fski for helping out lots with the C64 + Amiga, Gasman for helping out with the Speccy bits, Dan for being fab on the mixing desk, waffle for kicking the pc into shape, dfox and madame for being SUPER helpful when we had a couple of little showstoppers and m0d + sil for being generally brill and recording everything for posterity (including all my swearing probably *grin*) <3 Also gotta do a shout out to the chaps for providing such a stellar car service this year - big up ivan, stavs and zeb! woulda been a hella long walk without ya :) and lets not forget the visitors - you rocked the house (or hall - whichever you prefer *grin*)

\:D/

Also just a quick note; if anyone is missing a USB stick I seem to have aquired an extra FREECOM one, gimme a shout and I'll get it mailed to ya...
