Revision 2013 - Damages

category: parties [glöplog]
punqtured: which is ironic, seeing as Solskogen doesn't really have prize money, and still one of the reasons we had to move locations was that the party hall got serious marks from stickers and posters.

And please stop comparing stickers to weapons or anything else.
It was metaphorically. The question is if the person who brings in the stickers can be held responsible for what happens to them. Like Gloom said, it is not fair to expect drunk sceners to be aware of the difference in types of fabric that they slap those stickers on.

My fair guess is that if you bring stickers to a demoparty, this will result in damages. So it might be wise to revaluate the need for large quantities of pieces of plastic with a lot of glue. Posters are a more safe bet. And of course always talk to the infodesk before adding changes to the partyplace.

Cutting prizemoney? Nonsense, why should a compo winner be punished for the stupidity of some other drunk scener who abused stickers?
Alternatives I guess include putting this burden with the sponsors or raising ticket prices, or removing party-features. A euro can be spent only once.

I would have thought that all of this would be common sense,.

Even as a sofascener I recieved some damage.
I fell asleep with my face in the laptop when the stream was down,
drooling heavily and causing the letters H,J,K and U to stop working.
I have now donated some money to the stream service, hoping this won't happen again.

I agree on cutting whatever that can be cut if money is short due to dickhead behaviour. Prize money does indeed seem to be the best solution since I hear that ie. streams and such are sponsored (and cannot be cut in advance only for next years event). Having a dickhead buffer-stash of cash that is bigger than the current one is another solution, but that means either raised prices (I wouldnt mind) or cut features.

I know you wouldn't mind and that's very kind of you, but it's kinda wrong to just consider damages as part of the budget and willingly agree to it happening. I'd say deducing prizemoney is a very good way of letting people know that there are consequences to this kind of stuff.

I agree - that said I should probably get the super-ticket next time anyway :)

@gloom. I'm really sad to hear, I usually pride myself putting posters only where they don't leave marks and using tape in a way that makes easy to remove.

If anyone have had problems with pants off posters, I WANT to know so I can either stop doing the wrong thing or just stop with the posters.

Cutting features that will affect all visitors equally seems to be more useful since that will also affect 'abusers', while cutting prizemoney would be something they probably don't care about at all. I agree that the money has to come from somewhere tho and that no organizer should be left with a hole in the wallet due to dickhead behaviour!

Stickers or posters are nice and can add to the party experience (really loved prince's gfx wallpaper), just remember that their misuse and the resulting damages may jeopardize the future of such a great party. In my experience landlords are not very forgiving when it comes to damages to their property :/

But seriously:
While one may attribute some responsibility to the sticker distributors, the 'stickerers' are not in the clear just because they were drunk.

I'll repeat that in bold, because it is so true: Being drunk is no excuse for doing stupid shit.

The goodie bag had DICE pens, noone is blaming them if someone scribbles all over the wall with them. Similarly noone used the tagwall markers to write all over the wall.

The problem with stickers was that there were given a reasonably free pass in previous years, and it was only now when shit hit the fan.

I enjoy stickers! I like putting stickers on my laptop or my C64 for example. It would be a sad day for me if I could no longer get new, cool stickers at parties. That said, it's probably a better idea to hand out your stickers to people who are sitting down in front of their computers instead of people who are drunk and rowdy by the fireplace.

If that means I'll have to actually start sitting down in front of my computer to get free stickers, so be it. :-)

SunSpire: The prize money always depends on how much money is left at the end of the party anyway. The most important thing it depends on is obviously the number of visitors. Less visitors, less prize money. More visitors, more prize money. Simple as that. Now certainly you can't be sure of what kind of money is still required after the party for cleaning up unexpected mess, but I'm sure having a buffer for that would help.
@all: Prevention is better than a cure, I think the message has been received and that is that. Everyone can now go back to making their prods from the next party on the schedule. \:D/

M0d: you are in serious lack of Poo-Brain sticker. Will fix that asap!

And stickers are cool, people sticking them on dumb places are idiots, dfox is tired and annoyed by scraping off the walls, so let's all be nice next year and not ruin the hall.

Those DSS stickers are really nasty though, had one on the leather arm if my coat and it took the paint right off when I removed it. :(

Instead of pictures, why not hand out more of these? Thanks to Knoeki! :)

A collection of demoscene figurines would be cool.

On a serious note: stickers are cool but please, think about where you put them. If you want to stick them on something that is not yours, it is obviously not a good idea.
I totally want a BriteLite bobblehead.

esselle: I would love to hand out *more* but they're already quite expensive for me (I think I handed out about 80 euro worth of ponies, which was only a small box full)

@Knoeki: and they were great!

Sad to hear this but I like scene stickers, my a1200 tower is totally plastered in group stickers and its a piece of art. I also think it is an important part of the creative side of the scene we should not ban, just treat it like vandalism. If you are an idiot that shits in his own backyard this is just lack of respect and should be treated in a criminal damage manner instead, with a fine and a ban.
