the list of things you always forget to do when zipping your prod

category: general [glöplog]
- extend the zip name to _partyversion when you're not absolutly completly sure the compo version is the final.

- add the smallest, and extremly "relevant information + minimum requirements informative only" file_id.diz (and make sure it stays within the 40 columns limit)

- add mention on the infofile to the dll's it uses.

- send more fuckings to kewlers and greetings to mfx.

- consider having extreme sex with dead lobsters once again in a near future.

actually the traditional column limit for file_id.diz is 44.

Traditionally sceners extend the borders of this limit, it's like with 8+3 filenames, sometimes they make sense, for most of us the extended length is better. :)

file_id.diz with minimum of information... ^_^
That means, sceners should start again to put relevant information in there... :)

All in all, this are good hints, some of them are a bit too oldschool. ;)
44 columns wide is a bit... too wide for SOME BBSes. It all depends on the software. You're much better off playing it safe and keeping it 39 characters wide or less.

But then again I've seen DIZ's lately that exceed EIGHTY (80) columns wide! Oh, the humanity!

radman i dont know what lame bbs software you are referring to... gs-mailbox? remote access? prometheus? =)

the ELITE bbs software, like ami-x, fame and pcb, always could deal with 44... :) even some lame ones like c-net.

I'm generalizing. Respect to PCBoard and Ami-X, but over here most elite systems were running forum-hacks, primarily Oblivion/2, but also Renegade, Telegard and of course PCBoard.

But yeah I think Spitfire or something truncated, ahahha...

Right, let's hear from Anthrax now.

NOT!
whats with the 8+3 filenames? is it just that theres no bbs software that can take this incredible technical feat?

who the fuck cares? nobody goes around and looks in the archive nowadays anyways, one downloads it and reads the readme, its faster than clicking around...

remote access was actually quite nifty, as long as you only used its core communication functions and coded the rest of the system yourself (which actually also goes for PCB and PCExpress).
ps: thanks for bringing that up again!
as a reference, there's also the 'how to do a release package for todays scene lamers' - article in some issue of pain..

- overlooking that accidental extra copy of the data folder, thus exceeding the actual compo filesize limits.

yes they are.

When you upload the right version of your prod, it should always feature fuckings to skrebbel ;)

dipsie, i was actually referring to you using the word "ELITE" as if it came straight from Hackers (the movie).

- The first version of "The Poor Freak" I uploaded on the net, included pkzip.exe in the package. (And I was terrified then because during that time my PC was also infected by a virus. Hopefully, pkzip.exe was safe..)

- oh,. and doing a CRC check. Most important..

at least two times i've forgotten to delete the auto-created ".bak"-file that ultraedit likes to leave behind after i add those extra bits of information to the excess info and file_id.diz-files. that's a bit annoying, especially since it's usually someone who downloads the demo(s) that let's me know and can't seem to resist the urge to rub my face in it. :)
