demos for PICO-8 fantasy handheld console?

category: general [glöplog]
So I recently got the alpha for PICO-8, a "fantasy handheld console" that never was, and I've been having lots of fun with the built-in game editor.

I can imgine that's completely up the alley of other folks here, and I'd like to see some intros for this thing so here's the "system specs":

Display: 128x128, fixed 16 colour palette
Input: 6 buttons x 2 players
Cartridge size: 32k
Sound: 4 channel, 64 definable chip blerps
Code: Lua (max 15400 bytes of source code)
Sprites: Single bank of 128 8x8 sprites (+128 shared)
Map: Single 128x32 (+128x32 shared)

You can share new cartridges as png files that are ROMs steganographically encoded in a cover image. Very fun stuff.

Oh, and while graphics and sound chips seem to be relatively fast, the "CPU" is *slow*, so getting some good effects going is quite challenging.

Unfortunately PICO-8 isn't free, it's 20 bucks, but I've spent more on worse. :)

Nice! A lot of progress between the 1st and 2nd demo.

Not really. It's broadly the same thing, but with a buggy starfield (there's one star that's moving at 1px/s or so.). Still, cute idea, great tool for kids and some unexpected new paniq music. :)

ham: thx!

tomaes: a star that moves at 1px/s isn't buggy, it's moving slowly. also, pouet is "broadly the same thing" as the google search page.

Different sin() offsets for sprites _are_ "broadly the same"; And when a single instance out of a truckload of uniform objects moves an order of magnitude slower than all the other ones (read: barely at all), it has all the markings of a glitch. "it's not a bug, it's a feature" excuses won't help. You didn't even need to get all defensive if you'd posted the cube thing instead (still no points for originality, I'm afraid. :P)

Cool to see this outside Lexaloffle's Twitter and actual applications. Very cool stuff but can't be arsed to turn off find-as-you-type to play the games. preventDefault(), people! (And yes, I realize that is more in the scope of PICO-8 itself than PICO-8 carts.)

Great tool for pretending to live in a parallel universe and pretending to make releases.

The list of faults keeps getting longer. ;) Although I think there have been fixes.

Very cool. Should be a 'real' game.
