It would also be nice to have some sort of live-vj competition, maybe in conjunction with the annual ronny/hoffmann/logoober act. Basically every participating team getting a couple of minutes before the video-signal is passed to the next team. I always got the feeling that creating matching live visuals while listening to a (fresh) track is the ultimate speed coding/design challenge. It's probably super hard to pull off, but all the demotools should be used for more than size-coding.

This is an interesting idea!

Aside from the mention of teams and being turn-based, isn't that basically how the live shader competition goes? The input to each shader is a live DJ.
Nope, shader compo is so booooooring. Especially for a person like me, who tried hard, but hate coding related stuff and have absolutely no idea of what the shader is :) Not knowing basics it's quite hard to judge if it's "wow" or "boo". So, having at least live vj battle connected with live sets would be fab. Or at least some counterweight attractions on the second stage.

But, I'm not an enemy of it. it's just first evening and there are shedload of cool folks around campfire to get lost with :D

Speaking about seminars I expect this one with Smash shining around would be pretty overcrowded - how about shifting it to the main stage for more audience? Just thinking.

I have a news! the demoscene is not a hobby for you!

hey wait, what? no!

AzzaroMWI, it's an entirely different dynamic to be on the main stage than in the quite smaller seminar room. It's always been get in early, get your seat. I believe they have on an occasion broadcasted the video stream from the seminar room onto the big screen. However I would say that largely, though definitely not entirely, those who didn't go to the seminar aren't interested and so would likely prefer a quieter main hall. (At least as much as it gets at Revision, anyway.)

Plus smash gave his own opinion a post above anyway. :)
and if you hate coding so much, smash's seminar will probably bore you to bits too

I have news, too! The demoscene is for everyone who feels that its a cool thing.
And if you do graphics like Azzaro, even more!

Not everyone has to be a coder, you know? =)

You know the feeling when you're trying to throw in a really quick thing to have something for the compo and you're quite pleased with your quicktro for what it is, then you tweak it a bit more and it kind of turns into a proper production and suddenly feels shit again?

I know there are hotels and flights and vacation stuff already booked for many people, but could you please, prettypleasewithsugarontop postpone the party by two weeks or something? :)

I sure could use that time :) I'll get on the phone with the pope!

Wow! Another two weeks! Another two weeks of procrastination, feeling bad, … just to end up at the exactly same point… again… :D

Alcatraz #jailhouse put a stop to that procrastination and "feeling bad about it" phase. Lots of stuff happened, we'll be back in revision with releases. Everyone meeting for a weekend before the dempoarty starts is very productive indeed.

Nah, I'm all about visual side of things and what guys achieved cooperating with mainstream media. And Smash is good at this. I seriously couldn't care less about the coding aspect behind it, though :)

I feel exactly the same, but don't know if our prod would be salvageable in two weeks, if ever. Guess the only thing to do is to roll it out and be done with it.

I didn't procrastinate, but overloaded myself with too many tasks for Revision. The result (a demotool finished, but the demo which it was made for will be only 80% complete) feels very wrong. :-/

Pareto, I curse you!

Hi everyone

At Aarhus University we are interested in how highly skilled people use technology for design. We believe that demoscene production have something to teach us: demosceners have after all created magic for so many years under various constraints: technological, time, in groups, 4k, 64k, etc. This means that I want to conduct a small research-project at Revision, but for that I need your help.

I want to conduct a set of “contextual interviews”, and this won’t take too long: an initial 30 minutes, and then a bunch of small visits 10 minutes tops, maybe 5-6 times during the party

1) At the beginning of your work process at the party, I want to spend about 30 minutes getting insight into the background, idea and style of your production, as well as a description of your toolchain/demosystem setup. What tools do you use, how do they work together, facilitate collaboration etc? Whats the main ideas, what scenes are planned?

2) During the party I will come by when its fitting, and ask more specific questions about which part of the demo you are working on now. Are you experimenting with getting an effect to work just right? are you scrambling to create a filler? Reusing some old content? Developing something new and kickass?

3) After the party, I might want some online short discussion to verify whether I am right on what was going on - this is just to verify how cool you guys were 😃

4) I would like some research data: screenshots/pictures of your screen as I visit, and I might voice record us (probably too noisy but one can dream). None of this material will be shared without your expressed consent.

After Revision the plan is to write a paper for the CHI conference - the most esteemed conference in my field of Human-Computer Interaction. In this paper, me and my co-authors will anonymize you as much as you want to so “programmer from a well-known demo group”, could be your callsign, or if you want the fame, we can put you and the guys in there with full handles and group-names. Thats up to you, it is inconsequential to the research. You will, as a thank you for your help, be offered beer/schnapps/falafels/whateverIcangetmyhandson, or possibly a set of the elusive now out of print DUB BattleCards if I scrounge up a few decks 😃

Hit me up on and say that you want to contribute to advancing knowledge, and spreading the demoscene gospel

Check out my website at http://www.designmaterials.dk if you want to know what I am general am working on, or http://bit.ly/22wUjJi for the verification of me actually being a university researcher (as well as part of DUB). If anyone is interested in other kinds of academia-demoscene-collabos, I am all ears as well. I have a few ideas but this is about what I can do at Revision 😃

another mudpoint!
Before styx arrived at my place

After I told styx that he needs to clean my garage because it's his first demoparty and it's "traditional" to do so
