Were there any demo scene parties So. CA, USA back in the late 90s?

category: parties [glöplog]
My friends and I started getting into the demo scenes by watching them like Future Crew's Second Reality. We were jealous that there were big demo scene parties in Europe. Were there any in Southern California, United States, back then?

Thank you in advance. :)

No. Your nearest serious demoparty back in those days would've probably been NAID in Quebec.

Also, the "scene" in "demoscene" are the people. And there is only one. So you cannot watch "demo scenes", just "demos". (Why are Americans getting this wrong so often?)

I read in an Australian Bachelor's thesis about the demoscene that sceners call themselves "sceners" because of the scenes in a demo - which of course is nonsense.

Quote:
People who make demos (mostly males) call themselves ”Sceners”, this is because watching a demo is like observing a scene or environment, much like a play.

As far as I know (and I may be entirely wrong but that's how I recall I've been told), NVScene 2008 was the first demoscene event in California.

I don't know anything about it other than the fact that it shows up in a Demozoo search for 'California', but: Spring Break

  • KansasFest

I have the task for ya...
Go here and see the list... Choose what you are interested and see inside what link contains.. Some have still active sites or pics links

Thanks all.

Wow: "LayerOne Demoparty" had a few L.A. events recently. I noticed the list got long now too with more places.

http://demoscene.us/parties/

I haven't touched this page since 2012, but Spring Break was held in San Diego CA from 1997-99 (I was at the last one). SoCal was held at somebody's house (IOR, maybe), but SB was held at UCSD.

It's good to see scientific literature on scene, but citation needed, some things are arbitrary.
Like, the strange mix of hackers/crackers/good bad guys, and then people remixing demos (like Second Reality 64) means breaking/destroying stuff?

Anyway,. my other wonder sometimes is why scene is in northern europe and not much UK/US? The article says "cold weather" but not convincing. Maybe jobs and different culture.

Exactly the same for me too!

Some say Americans are all about making money and therefore don't waste their time on demos.

It's a cultural thing for sure, but I'm not entirely certain what causes it; it's not an Europe-vs-the-world thing either, plenty of countries in Europe that don't have a strong scene (Italy, the Baltics, hasn't been a proper party in Spain for ages, etc.)

At this point I'm starting to think it's just about having a core group of people who keep shit going - that's how the US East Coast or Japan caught up in the last few years too.

"Critical mass + timing" seems to be a recurring theme, yeah.

I think that scene as specific community has more people attracted in from Europe than other continents and does not suit the american mentality but of course people are not same and for sure in US there is many positively crazy creative people who would fit the demoscene communities but again there is another thing: America is anothe rworld and American parties remain American parties as travelling from Europe to US is a hell. So we have ours, you have urs.

Thsi is all just guessing, not scientifical proofs so u can feel free to negate what I think.

Gargaj I am not a native speaker and my original native language is much richer in writings than English, so I tend to write more than need. kill me for this.

Lol, reading this thread a bit. Just rename demoscene party to Demoscene-con and you have crowds coming at you instantly.

I disagree. I cringe when I see masters thesis writers try to analyze a subculture they never really experienced.

Haha, boy, you sure got all us nailed down!

How come a master thesis is anywhere close to scientific? ;)

Oh no, I missed that! Otherwise, I would play Smash or Destop in a cosplay party.

But honestly, hungarian-con doesn't count!

Yeah ok, it needed a lot of citations and references, it has zero, I just feared to not be disrespectful to the author, so I said it's still a good thing someone writes articles for demoscene.
