Demoscene and Spore?

category: general [glöplog]
Hey i was reading an article about Will Wright's new game called Spore and in the article, mention is made of the demo scene and more specifically content creation tools for 64k's (werkzeug and the like), does anyone know if any sceners are involved with this project?

direct quote:
For inspiration, Wright looked to the "demo scene," a group of (mostly European) coders who specialized in doing a whole lot with a little bit of code. Their procedural programming methods were able to, for example, fit an entire 3D game in 64K, using mathematics to generate textures and music, etc. "I just found this incredibly exciting," Wright confesses, describing the kinds of work that he saw come out of the demo scene.

he recruited an elite strike team of coders (who, if you were to believe his slideshow, dressed like ninjas) and put them in a "hidden facility" to experiment with new ways of giving the user powerful tools and generating tons of dynamic content without armies of content creators

And how could videogames benefit of procedural size optimization, in the era of DVDs?
Well, I believe that any possible answer would be OT anyway ;)

that wasn't about procedural size optimation but procedural content creation.
dressed like ninjas?

dixan: it's not to save space, it's to save human hours for making the content. Also, specifically for Spore, it enables (i.e. should enable) the users themselves construct things and distribute that online easily.

Handhelds ;p

I love this sort of game, give me a sandbox and let me throw stuff in it an see what happens. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

By the way, for the german-literate there is also an article on spiegel.de, which is the biggest german online-news-site, also with a link to breakpoint.

Funny that after the whining how obsolete the demoscene is compared to modern games, there are opposite opinions in the games industry.

we might be behind technically but we still push the envelope on some aspects now and again. and envelope pushing is an easy way to becoming source of inspiration. anything slightly creative can easily become source of inspiration even. complex ideas can come from simple things just as easily as simple ideas can come from complex things.

or well, we could argue that it depends on the IQ and pouetize this thread with shitloads of *BASS* and pics of female jugs.

well hey, it saves tons of money not developing cool, complex characters and buildings and people get the sense of identity looking at their own creations, which, no matter how utterly craptacular they may be, look more satisfying to the player.

Everybody wins, especially the publisher who will not hesitate to charge a premium for a hyped game!
