tube passed the product on top10

category: general [glöplog]
What the pouet top10 is actually containing is
the set of productions that are popular, and
source of consensus.

It is normal than a production like tube brings
a consensus considered how small (in content,
not bytes) it is.

Nothing in the position of it in the top 10 is
surprising or illogical (Q.E.D)

(you'll never ever find a measurement meaningful
to us all anyway. personally i'd be pretty much more interested
in a top10 of "popular" productions (productions on
which a good amount of votes have been filled) sorted by
decreasing variance)

I loved to see Tube in the 1st place. In fact, it's so great that every piece of shit, small or big, PC or not, is able to climb there! It makes the thing sooo funny, it was so funny to see a 256byte X86 asm DOS intro kicking every ass there in the top ten of the whole demoscene! This is what I call elite =)

This opportunity is lovely, keeping 256byte intros out is like discriminating and never giving the possibility to them to climb, of course I understand what Gloom want's to say, but I prefer it the way it is! ;)

Apparently people don't understand what it means to be #1 in the top10
It means the prod has received a 'thumbs up' from many people, because they like the prod.

It makes my toes curl to see people commenting things like: "great code, marvellous thing!" and then DOWNVOTE it, because it doesn't deserve the #1 spot, in their eyes.

Suppose i like Heaven7 better than fr-08. In my opinion then, Heaven7 should be higher in the charts. Would it then make sense to downvote fr-08?

The defense rests.
ile: yeah, i understand that, but let's look at why people give thumbs up. when i saw tube i thought "wow! 256bytes, this rocks!" and yes, gave it a thumbs up. however; there is something about fascination for things.. that was more like when you pick up a pack of gum at the supermarket because it's placed close to the counter, it's more of an impulse.

now; my "thumbs up" for heaven7 is more of a lasting fascination-thing. it sticks. i would have forgotten about tube a long time ago if it wasn't high on the top10. now, people might argue that this is a good thing, well..

oh; ..and i wasn't aware that people downvote stuff to have an impact on the charts.. that just sucks.

ile: since when did you get riled up about charts? I hardly remember looking at it :)

Get over it people. It's a pissing contest based on hits and thumbs, not qualtiy.

gloom: i think that the top10 should stay as it is now. But also a new 'panel' should be added that will contain introductional productions for newcomers.

top10.php should only present one category/platform at once. this way it's freakin slow.

I totally agree with Gloom that the top10 doesn't work as it should, but it's hard to think of flawless system. Indeed, if a demo is in the top10 list then people act on impulse and click it, making it automaticly more popular. As far as I know a product gets more popular if more people request it and it's not related to the number of thumb-ups.
Maybe the top10 should be unrelated to both demand and thumbs. Thumbs would only be an indicator for how cool a demo/intro/musicdisk/whatever is. My suggestion would be a seperate voting section for the best intro/demo/etc. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Make a random top 10 list so we all get confused.

You were right, something is going wrong with the charts. Porrasturvat is 3rd now!!! And the top10 prods seems to not moving for ages..

But I like them and we should not remove them or discriminate them..

means 256b impresses more people than fulllenght demos around. means game is way more funny than lame prods.

these are facts. as about me, i'd say 256b deserves that (and its 101% scene thang - something like this wont happen anywhere else) but the game, well games are meant for cracking and intros infront of them are almost always more exciting than game itself ;)

And tube is still one there - I think it is time to move it down, everybody please vote it down!
