Actually, the best technical effect I've seen (relative to the power of the machine, of course) was found in a demo of the Aliiance Germany (Atari ST), and it was a monochrom smooth sinus scroller that move forward and backward, and that was also rotating so it move reverse... never understand how they manage to do it @50hz...

"something i really like is the voxel-twist effect seen in various demos (can't name any now, sorry :)"

that was in pole by aardbei or fantasy by trinity :D

the fairlight "light coming out of a few metaballs" effect sucks ass imho :) not enough ballz, not enough light, not enough accuracy

"can you do better?"

yes i can

yes i know i also coded it myself but it was ugly ;)

for example the one in Shianlee is very nice
plek: you know that is render to texture !

correct me if i'm wrong :)

I always used to get a kick out of anything hoplite/orange used to do... He´s still the #1 coder of alltime on PC imho. That shit was sexy

Best effect is in 9 FINGERS demo from SPACEBALLS in year 93 on Amiga 500 cool effect of videocaptured dancing girls look like low polygon modells (for 93 year this stuff rocks) also the hand with fingers looks like 3D...I was shocked when I first watched it
the best effect ever is real time rotating traffic lights with windows style multitasking, seen in Pelulamu by pWp.

Anything in Nexus 7 / Andromeda just plain rocks.
That wavy dot effect in that old amiga demo.
Feedback effects, particularly if Orange is doing them.
3d voxel sand in Phase One / Capsule.
The buzzsaw in Desert Dreams / Kefrens.
The first decent realtime raytracer (was that MFX?)

The 32 scrolling-layers effect in Total Triple Trouble by Rebels (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=2720) are awesome !! Just very impressive !

The deformed picture in a flying glass in Zif kickasses too http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=1149
i really like the 'drawing' effect in 'paper' by statix - the way it foes from 2D to 3D, not seen that before or since ...

spiny

well i guess you could take a snapshot of a frame of a 3d scene. then start with a paper-like texture, move the a pencil object along the edges, drawing lines. voila?

the best effect ever made for me isnt done yet!
The borderless C64 screen by 1001 Crew in 1986 (I guess). Everyone was used to a screen with a light-blue border and suddenly there was an intro that took this border away. The whole screen was full of random black-white noise making some believe that their TV sets had broken down. And suddenly there was this scroll covering the whole screen.
I Remember a Fullscreen (No Border)
Picture X-Y Scroller... When i saw this one
the first time together with this wonderful
music in the background i was really amazed...

heres the prod:
