Breakpoint 2005 after-party thread (includes results ;)

category: general [glöplog]
Yeah, I already bitched at some 8bit atari people - hopefully next year we'll have a Pokey entry or something. And an atari ST entry from one of the YM chipmakers who can take that horrible sound chip and make damn fine stuff with it. (I still love the sid sound but seriously, when someone turns the YM chip into something musical, that in itself is an accomplishment in my book.)

Loved that compo, already pushing folks to do something for next year's compo (:
wayfinder: But why? Ok sure, the sound quality doesn't compare to PC trackers (like Renoise), but that's not the point. In fact quite the opposite, 4ch musicians tend to focus on content rather than finish.

Also, if it were a question of sample quality and all that, why keep the SID compo alive longer than the 4ch compo? The Amiga deserves a music compo every bit as much as the C64. Go back to the roots, man! Keep the spirit alive! And a couple of etceteras..

You really feel unwanted these days if you try to stick with your platform, unless that platform happens to be the C64, which everyone is too afraid to mess with. :/

Dalezy: i wasn't talking about the executable compos. They're nice, and you can easily enter an Amiga chipmod in there. But the kind of music that helped make the Amiga the outstanding scene platform that it used to be was 4ch tracked music with actual samples. I really miss that at parties. And it sucks that the 4ch compo just disappeared like that. I still haven't heard any BP or MS organizer say anything about why that happened.

Dr_Doom,

Stop whining, start producing. Seriously, your whole argument is "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH"

wayf: well, he does have some sort of a point regarding that maybe the mmul compo should go 4ch. i mean.. we already have streamed music for the most high quality stuff.. tracked music isnt that "alive and kicking" nowdays, might aswell keep the "tracked music" compo abit more accessible to oldschool machines. but well, its not really important in the end if its limited to 4ch or 64ch in the end, couz ppl will always go for what is beeing done with it (and afaik you dont play renoise format with any plugins so there is no real "completly unfair" advantage..)

@wayfinder:
Hey, relax. I'm not whining, I'm just puzzled. It doesn't seem to me that there was any good reason for dropping the 4ch compo. And nobody's saying anything. I feel like I'm on the X Files or something. "There never was a compo, it was a weather balloon, now go away."

But whatever.

With some risk of making a fool of myself, I would have merged the exec.music compos into one, and added a 4ch mod compo. But that's just me.

Well, I obviously second that, although idunno about merging the two executable compos. But then I don't really know how to feel about the whole executable music idea. Hm.

I would definately cast a vote for keeping the 2 separate. If for no other reason than to get more entries from the other 8bit platforms, who were skeptical before. (I can name other reasons.)

I'd also vote to throw out the streamed music compos altogether. Tho I love the stuff folks do with mp3 and ogg stuff, it's not as pure 'scene' as formats that pretty much are done by scene-related tools.

I'd also vote, overall, to keep the FORMATS the same for a while and see how year 2 turns out.

Maybe we can do some testing over at Nectarine on this voting-theory thing. I think Doh and I might be able to combat each other on some ideas (:

(no I don't know what's going on over at Nectarine with the streams or the server. wish I did. Anyone seeing Yes, please let him know we are worried and would like to know if he's ok.)

ps: nuh uh!
Dr_Doom, the 4chn compo wasn't dropped, it was merged with the mchn compo.

dr.doom: at evoke, we kept 4ch compo until 2003 for traditional purposes. but concerning the quantity and the quality, it was more and more pointless, so we skipped the 4ch compo in 2004, having instead a tiny music compo, where 4ch chips can participate as well, and a multichannel compo where 4ch modules can participate as well.

yeah. tiny music compos are nice. and besides, 4ch modules can also do well in the mch compos... i remember protesting merging the 4ch and mch compos when big parties like tg and asm did so in -97 but that didn't stop me from reaching top3 with a 4ch module at the gathering amongst all those biggie multichannel ones. :)

dipswitch, wasn't the quantity and quality at evokezoo3's 4chnlcompo rather high? i remember 10 tunes taking part there, and at least 5-6 of them were quite nice (mine not included of course =).

melw: It's not about the unfair competition. I couldn't care less if my module wins or not (or rather, I'd be shocked if it did ;). It was the compo itself I liked. Listening to the songs and admiring the talent of fellow 4ch composers.

I love all the Amiga compos, and it's such a huge shame that there has to be one less because.. well.. eh.. yeah, I still don't know why. I've decided to stop pondering that. Some day aliens will abduct me and tell me the truth through an anal probe or something. Until then I'll go like this: *shrug* ;)

I also want a pixel graphics compo 8)

okkie: They sure are. But that's a poor excuse for letting bad things happen. ;) You need to hold on to the things you care about.

wayfinder: But it started as one. And it's an Amiga standard even if other platforms have 4ch trackers. And the formats usually allowed are all Amiga formats that play in hardware on Amigas. 4ch music is to the Amiga what SID music is to the C64. Even to the point that you can make and play SID music on other platforms than the C64.

dalezy, yeah, you're right, at evoke it was pretty decent. but already 2003 i was basically the only evoke organizer pursuading a continuation of the 4ch compo. but at some point i didn't see any point to keep up the resistance in favor of an antiqued concept, and came up with the tiny music thingie which worked out quite nice i think.

Dr_Doom, I disagree :) I used an 8 channel tracker on the Amiga and a 4 channel tracker on the PC...

Great party, the organizers (which really managed to seem well organized, unlike it is the case at many other parties) did an astonishingly good job - I even had few chances to miss the cool look and feel of the BP03/04 location since they succeeded in making the sports hall less sucky as expected =)
And yes, the toilets were dirty after a while - but realizing that there were rather few of them, they still were rather clean. Even paper shortage occured pretty rarely - I´ve seen different toilets on other parties as well.

People are always bothering about our fecal fixation, but seems that on the other hand the only point people bother on a party seems to be, strange enough, the TOILETS! And if people are to silly to shit proper (doing toiletpapermess all around or shit beneath the porcellan) then don't blame it on us, we tried to teach you to do better! :-P
