AI is forcing the hand of the Demoscene.

I realized that there is often a pattern that if any form of demoscene creative output is not endorsed enough, its instantly shunned. Meaning, even if you make something not intended to follow trends, or just to do what the fuck you wanted stylistically or whatever wise.
In that case sorry for not realizing the context you said this in; but this also means we're on the same page here, albeit coming to different conclusions.

For the sake of the small zero reading comprehension crowd above let's first clarify that what I said above was meant as a general statement, not specifically aimed at AI in demos. I never said using AI was not "lame". In fact, a mostly genAI demo would most probably earn a thumbs down from me, if I'd even bother to watch it, because why spend my time watching anything that nobody made.

What I'm saying though is don't let detractors, well, detract you from anything. Yeah, what you said is true, reception can be harsh. I'm absolutely no stranger to getting shat upon for not fulfilling people's expectations, and yes, it hurts. But what I've also learned is that's not really important. If you do something mostly for yourself nobody can take it from you. And the community at let's say a small party is way stronger that here or any other place on the wider internet, so do it for their enjoyment instead.

Yeah, but why would you advise someone to go with it nevertheless? Isn’t it a bad advice then?

Wow dude, what a heartwarming statement, I really mean that :). Thats absolutely something I needed to hear for 5-6 years. Its why I had pretty much stopped doing anything demo related for that time, not just personal mental health shit. I felt if I cannot keep delivering demos as best as I could for my effort, its not worth trying. These days I just wanna release something I know that I put a decent amount of care into, not "compofillers" or basically the code version of shitposts. I just wanna feel that buzz again of actually doing something reasonable. Again, I never want to compete or win things, I just always wanted to make things exactly on my own terms. In my own time.

We really need to have a drink together again (if only to trick you into doing SID again) :o)

Srsly, do whatever the fuck you want. Even if people LIKE ME will tell you it is lame and sucks. It is your's, not mine, or anyone elses. All that matters is that YOU enjoy making it. If you embrace AI - go for it, full force.

Demos i have made have been called "trainwreck of a demo" right here for that matter. And i have won compos with demos _I_ thought were pretty lame and even went outside the hall at Mekka when price giving took place, because i was ashamed of winning against basically no competition with this shit. And at the time i made those things, if i had AI to help me with this and that. OH YEAH.

Who cares

And as I realized, even when you don't use AI at all, which is my experience when doing the posts, just make the prods anyway like any old artwork, which is how I approach my physical art, and I guess is how I should approach demos now too this year. The people that like our stuff will like it, screw the rest and make demos about it anyway. Don't let people on Pouet of all places tell you how to do what you find fun, whether it be code, art, or music.

I guess that was my takeaway even if not using AI and hitting a deeply personal wall of self-expectations.
