The Meteoriks Awards 2026

category: general [glöplog]
'Tis the season, the season to watch ALL the demos once! And then present our favourite selection to and celebrate it together with you!

Our jurors are already browsing through the preselection, and we would love you to join them!

So: Do you love demos? Do you love celebrating them yet a little more? Have you ever commented on the nominations after the fact to let the world know who should have been nominated?

All very good reasons for finally becoming a juror!

Here is what your next couple of months would entail, if we get the honour of having you:

  • Help deciding on categories with your fellow jurors
  • Review a share of last year's productions
  • Identify up to five nominees in a specific category
  • Choose a laureate
  • Represent your category live during the award show

All in all, this will take between four and eight evenings' worth of time, mostly spread across January and February.

Visit our website to learn more and sign up for jury "duty" until January 1st, we would love to have you!

We are looking forward to working and celebrating the best productions of the year with you!

- The Meteoriks Team

Yeeey ... we really need that feature 'list all demos for 1 year, sort by bendovers' ... so we know where to start

We'd still love (and quite honestly: need) more jurors to join our ranks.
Don't worry, you'll be joined by seasoned colleagues who'll help you through the process, your most important competence should be a good idea what you're looking at (having released before in those respective categories, or have a professional background and be somewhat active in the demoscene), and the ability to convey and discuss your opinion in a civilised, safe manner.

You can still apply here:

Is there a nomimee missing in above list for midskool ?
added on the 2026-02-28 09:10:07 by magic magic
They were 4 midschool, I was expecting the 5th when I was watching the stream, and got surprised it ended up there.

Should have had another nomination for Taedium Vitae right there!

There should have been a 5th entry to the midskool nomination list. Plenty of choice :)

Exactly my point.. doesnt make sense midskool only one with 4 prods..
@dojoe whats the explanation for this?
added on the 2026-02-28 15:42:07 by magic magic
We were hoping to see one or two DOS demos in there, but nope :)
I thought most would go to the Amiga demos anyways, let alone I noticed fantasy consoles had entered the contest, so way more than five to go.
added on the 2026-02-28 16:14:04 by Optimus Optimus
Fantasy consoles still have no rightful place in the midschool category. You can't even run the emulation on an accelerated a1200!

Since there's a glaring inconsistency in "Oldschool" + "Midschool" then "High-End"... maybe fantasy consoles should get their own "Newschool" category. :)

They're mimicking the platforms of old anyways, and come with simplified programming models.

Our nominations are not simply a ranking which we cut off at five - it's the set of up to five prods over which everyone in the jury could agree that they're the best of the year, with the word "agree" doing the heavy lifting. If all jurors in a category jury can agree on a set of five prods, we have five nominees. In this case however, the jurors could agree on four prods but were divided on who should be the fifth.

In cases like that the jurors keep discussing to see whether a consensus will emerge, but that did not happen this time. We did have a very small set of prods being discussed for the fifth nomination but the lack of consensus meant that we were unable to pick any one over the others, and in that case we believe the only sensible option is to pick none and go with only four nominations, which is what we did.

In that case, the fifth nominee could have been chosen based on the viewers' votes - the one chosen by the majority of users, excluding those already selected by the jury. What are these votes for?

If there 2 or even 3 contenders still being debated, it could actually be nice to nominate them all.

A Meteoriks nomination is pretty cool already.
5 nominees is the golden standard, but it's very hard to limit to 5
added on the 2026-03-01 12:56:30 by p01 p01
Having a hard upper limit seems sensible. Without that, there could perhaps be as many nominees as there are jurors. =)
added on the 2026-03-01 13:12:35 by Krill Krill
I know.
I'm mostly saying that, 6 nominees ain't unreasonable and would certainly feel better than having 4 then a 5th one a few days/weeks later.
added on the 2026-03-01 15:46:50 by p01 p01
hard upper limit of 13.37 nominations
