AI coding
category: residue [glöplog]
I'm getting pretty tired of the attitude that some people here have towards AI
(coding) in the Demoscene. If you were 30 years older you would have said the
same thing about (micro) computers and you would probably have said the same
thing about airplanes.
First; AI assisted coding (yes, not "vibe" coding) is FUN. I am feeling
things I haven't felt since the late 80s when I realized you could create
ANYTHING with computers. You didn't need money or super expensive
hardware, just a computer, skill and time. If you are at all interested in the end
result and not just the journey, AI coding is fantastic!
Second; This should not be that complicated in the demo scene. It is first and
foremost a way to show off your skills. Of course an AI-coded demo does not do
that. There is a logistics problem in figuring out who did what and where to
draw the lines, but in principle its about showing your skill, since there is
no practical or monetary value to demo scene productions.
So personally, I will continue to create tools and stuff with the help of my
extremely ambitious code-slave Claude, and if I ever create a demo again I will
pull an assembly book from the shelf and start typing opcodes...

sir this is a wendy
It's telling that you call it a slave.
It is very telling.
now fuck off.

Oooohh “you are feeling things”. Again, after 40 years. How sweet. Then I guess it’s ok to burn the world down if it makes you “feel things”. Screw you kids, screw your existance, grandpa is “feeling things” again!
You can run your agents all day and it would not come close to a single airplane-ride, so please, that not what it's about.
You just don't like it so you don't want it to exist, and you hate everyone who feels different.

"YOUR HONOR AS YOU CAN SEE I AM THE REAL VICTIM HERE! I AM BEING OPPRESSED FOR MY PERFECTLY VALID, MODERATE AND NUANCED OPINIONS BY THESE HORRIBLE LUDDITES!"
Nobody is being oppressed, you are just being assholes.
We're not the ones getting offended on behalf of LLMs.
Go “feel things”.
Some people feel something when fucking animals, weak argument bro.
@darya I am sure you do, so keep doing that then.
There are tons of communities out there that appreciate AI, sasq. Trying to force your slop onto the one community that doesn't actually makes you the asshole. So stop playing the victim.
i think it matters when the "end result" as you call it is a piece of art competing with other pieces of art and not a "i am too lazy to write a yaml parser myself, so i jeanClauded it" mundane, unimportant piece of code that doesn't have artistic merit but only purpose. especially when you Claude "journeyed" your (but not really yours is it?) artistic expression towards that "end result".

You forgot to write “I am very intelligent” at the bottom.

You didn't even read what I wrote did you?
TLDR;
AI assisted coding is fun, don't use it for demos.

Ok
I WANT POUET TO ACCEPT MY SINS

You've correctly identified that people don't like it very much when you post your AI garbage but you seem to have come to the wrong conclusions about what to do with that information.
When people tell you "no" that means it's not a subject for debate. No means no. What part about this is so difficult to understand?

sasq: Don't make the mistake of thinking that because every public AI discussion receives very vocal negative comments, this is representative of the general sentiment in the demoscene as a whole.
There is a great variety of opinions towards AI coding throughout the demoscene. This is most visible in the AI clauses of compo rules, which range from "All forms of fraternising with AI is forbidden. We do things as we have always done." to "Do whatever you want, as long as you declare honestly what tools you have used." and many things on the spectrum between.
Likewise, some parties have separate AI compos, while others stick to the usual categorisation by platform and size, rather than by what tools are used.
This is a collective exploration. Nobody has the power to decide on their own what belongs in the demoscene and what doesn't.
Don't try to convince the Pouet visitors. Go make a demo the way you like to make it.

ah the ever-classic and so totally unique condescending AI bro angle "oh just ignore the haters".
blueberry: Thanks for that. Yes I poked the bear because I was curious. Dumb idea.
sasq: The levelheaded discussions about this topic happen elsewhere than Pouët, but it's really not quite clear what your point in the OP is. If it's "AI assisted coding is fun, don't use it for demos.", then, uh... yeah ok: an opinion somewhere in the middle of the extremes.
If your intention was to "poke the bear", then yeah, you succeeded, but with a very predictable outcome as per previous threads, including the usual dramatis personae.

People have very strong pro and anti AI sentiments for obvious reasons. I don't generally like to tell what others should do but if there is something good in the technology, my view became more negative. Maybe because I was scrolling twitter and it's an eco chamber and now I see posts affecting every community, people modding retro character A on game B, crazy decompilations-recompilations (but sloppy with bugs), and even claimed like "I did this on a night, Claude did it while I was sleeping, it would take you months, and I have not freaking idea about coding but isn't that empowering?". I have seen so many hot takes that made me really hate it.
Nothing every in technology have been pushed and created such controversy. I don't have as negative feeling about Rust, web programming, clean code, nerd stereotypes or some other trend. But because AI is not a niche tool for certain fields, but is pushed "can do anything about everything better than any human, so if you don't use it why do you castrate yourself?". Techbros saying "your field is over", "your field is solved" (be it coding, art, video making, mathematics, science, literature), some days I wake up and I become grumpy.
Or maybe I should not look at any AI takes on social media and code my own thing the way I prefer. AI coding can be impressive or useful at few cases, but leaves me a very bad taste in my mouth so even if I found a good use for my hobby I would not want to touch it. At job could be different but we are not forced to use it but it's there and I try it a bit.
