Video Thief is good, you may also want to try PCXDump and Screen Thief on ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/programs/dos/editors/pcx-dump.zip and ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/programs/dos/editors/st158.zip for video mode grabs.

For complete textmode grabs I would use a combination of XBinCap 1.0 and XBIN2PCX available at ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/programs/dos/editors/xbincap.zip and ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/artpacks/2002/acid-95.zip (for the XBIN2PCX utility). This will allow you to grab full character fontset and pallete information if you wanted to manipulate it later (or you could just use the prior if you need PCX only).

Video Thief is the only one that's able to deal with the armored code of DOS demos.

video thief works fine, except for demos using vesa 2.0 modes... or maybe I haven't found the right options/switches ?

Possibly. I just took pics of Hyperventillation.

okay, now i tried all this stuff and none worked well...

vthief: it captures in some weird format, and i dont know how to convert it into something decent like gif or jpg.

pcxdump: tells me that the version is "too old". but there is no newer.

screenthief: same shit...

what to do ?

vthief comes with a program called vtfview which converts .vtf files to .bmp.

about pcxdump:
try setting another date on your system. this works fine here.

Neopaint has a screencapture utility called Neograb, seems to work quite well.

i used neograb back in the dos days... i wonder if i can still get hold of it...

could someone fix the link to vthief ? I would also be interested in a tool able to deal with vesa.
hmm, maybe I also should check some old mag cd's lying around... sometimes there were even some useful tool on em.

Another question. Windows screengrabbers? What do you suggest??? Don't know anyone, haven't heard anything. I didn't needed, cause I could use PrintScreen under win, but now I want to grab several screenshot of one demo. I can with PrintScreen, but it's some time to get out of the demo with Alt+Tab, paste the screenshot in a painting programm, save it as an image and then go back to the demo. So I prefer a programm, saving several screenshots like shot0001, shot0002, 000x, 00xx, xxxx, etc..

For DOS screenshot: my hint (for the coders) is to fake it.
Just make a memory dump during the intro... you could even fake the screenshot, if you prefer (see this)

I added vthief to artpacks as well:

ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/programs/dos/editors/vthief07.zip

I like windows and the magnificent "print screen" key :)

Running demos in VMWare will probably not get you very far as it doesn't support VESA.

Should be possible to grab a screenshot or two from some mode 13h demos though.

The vthief07.zip file doesn't contain any help on vtfview. How do you get it to save to a bitmap? 'vtfview /?' wasn't helpful.
