Advice for a first time demopartier

category: general [glöplog]
Seeing as we dont really have demoparties in Australia my first demoparty will be Breakpoint this year. Just wondering if anyone had some advice about what to bring/what to do/what not to do/general stuff you should know before you come etc.

Also can you still get a ticket even if you dont get one as soon as they open on friday i.e does BP ever sell out?

Thanks.

There -was- a useful list of things to bring and handy ettiquette thing here:
http://ojuice.net/faq.htm
but I can't find it anymore.
I'll reccomend
1. backups / install media of your demo/demotools/OS so that when your hard drive gets beer spilled on it you're ok
2. first aid kit
3. ear plugs so you can sleep if you need
4. cash. The ATMs will be out.
5. A good excuse for why you're carrying 3 laptops around. Group mates of mine have been detained at the border on suspicion of trafficking kid pr0n ir pirate software, and had their computers searched.
6. Power bars, network cables, usb drives if there's no network, extension cords.

...but the faq that I can't find has all this in better detail.

jesus christ GB what parties have you been to? :D

1. first off, why bring a computer? of course you have a portable one, feel free, but i dont feel its essential. a couple of DVD-R-s are enough if you dont have a rackable HDD or a flash drive.
2. first aid kit? a couple of headache and flu pills (maybe even some bandaids) are recommended just in case, but in general it depends on how you bear trips.
3. earplugs are handed out at bp for free i think. that also is a personal preference if you're annoyed by noise.
4. cash. yes. preferably euros. i found that 80-100 euros are usually enough for any party.
5. if you get to europe you're safe, as people are far less uptight about that here.
6. BP usually has WLAN, so use that if possible.

and no, bp wont run out of tickets.

personally what i would recommend:
- towel. you know why.
- sleeping bag + pillow. makes wonders if you dont have a hotel room.
- shower gel / soap, in case.
- spare set of clean clothes

and possibly:
- digicam
- german dictionary (albeit germans are very friendly and most of them has no problems comprehending english)

Generally I take a couple of pairs of underpants, a towel, a sleeping bag and cash to by beer and junk food from the nearest Aldi or similar super-cheap supermarket.

if you have cash you can buy all the things you'll need.

it's a good idea to have prods ready on some readable media, but if they are not you can "loan" someones computer at the partyplace for a couple of days for completing your prod, you just need to find some newbie who will be feeling honoured enough about giving out his computer for a true scener for the whole party.

also, passport and flight tickets are good to have, and don't lose them!

Yeah, Nosfe is right, DON'T lose your Passport/Ticket/money/whatever.

Also if you ask nicely, you can probably borrow anyone's computer if you want to finish work you did at hime. Like i did in 80% of my stuff. heh.

These were the times...

Dear Okkie,
the phrase "Don't mention the war!" is a widly accepted joke phrase. It is not an unsuitable comparism and therefore it doesn't trigger Godwin's law.

a wise man once said that all you need to bring to a party are:

* a toothbrush
* spare socks
* your wallet

... a wiser man later condensed this to the statement:

"what do you need a toothbrush and spare socks for if you have a wallet?"

niko: that would depend on how expensive the beer is at the partyplace now wouldnt it?

just make sure the wallet fits in your mouth.

Dear Madenmann,

I know, I know, I cursed myself.. but luckily it went unnoticed. To stop derailing I'll give the man some proper advice too.

Bring lube.. lots of it!
