Dos demos windows ports..

category: general [glöplog]
good luck with obtaining 10+ year old sources from mostly 'retired' demogroups and going thru megaold undocumented code written optimized (or not) for megaold compilers, specific vga tricks, etc.. sounds like very realistic to me! :)

how about using your time to improve dosbox (it is open source and all) instead of wasting it on porting old demos to a platform that will probably be obsolete in a couple of years anyway?

all demos should come atleast with instructions what drugs one needs to be on when watching them. some work with alcohol, some with lsd, some with pot. it's so hard to know beforehand!

what tribe said. take up the dosbox project, improve it for demoneeds like with gusemu32 integration, let univbe run neat.. (if you treat it as a sourceforge project, you might be lucky and ppl would actually help out coding for it if they're not too lazy) and considering the porttalk here, i assume you'd find enough people to actually port that code to every OS they use. ;)

how about you musicians and gfxians who bitch so much pick up coding yourselves? we coders are busy coding spikeballs!

having dosbox improved would be nice, but i guess there's not that much people interested in coding it. that would solve the 'portability issue' too, as if demos were ever intended to be portable.
besides, nosfe wins ;)

dosbox doesnt really need univbe, it just needs some more work with vesa 2.0 support, like hardcoding univbe mode numbers which demos want to use :D

all my own demos work fine under dosbox :)

It's a very long time since it stuck in number 0.63 and some people also have problems with breaking sound except if they reduce cycles in ridculous low numbers, regardless if their hardware is better than mine.

Windows ports are kindof half-good to me.. at least we can watch those old prods, but i've switched to osx now and probably won't have access to a windows box forever. Plus, in 10 years or so current windows prods probably won't work.

Videos almost never have the same kind of feel, cause they're almost always lower-res, have compression artifacts, and have lower framerate than the original. But howabout if the video was full 70hz instead of 30, full size and very high bitrate? Would it still be noticably different to the original? How big would the files be for an average 4 minute demo?

If that looked alright, with ever-bigger disks, and ever-faster internet, that could be a better option..

In ten years we'll have Winbox for today's prods.

well, one thing is.. if someone releases the sourcecode, people can atleast read and learn about the oldschool demo-effects and other waste or usefull code while trying to port it to windows using tinyptc for example. Its more fun that way (i think)... anyways... oldschool will never die!
someone should make a DOSBox version that works like kkapture :)
