- demo Windows Treble and Bass by PlayPsyCo [web]
- Saw the video. very cool :) Love the colourscheme and every scene is full of motion. Opposite of flyby! The soundtrack is awesome (apart from the trance lead in the tweeker showoff). Very prodigylike. I also like the way these worlds seem to be steaming hot. Like if I would touch some of this metal, I'd burn myself. I'll have to watch it again :)

- @oswald, I wonder about making an "educational" mode for the final, where you can add the individual small touches and see what makes these effects look good. I guess I would always see the difference that these touches do myself. Before deadline last year, the sphere was just the two lookups and I know that it didn't look any good compared to what it looks like now. You make a good point in saying that sacrificing quality for speed usually does the trick as that is what demo effects have been all about since the beginning. Most of the time people don't notice the difference.
Some perspective correct texturemapping and perhaps subtexel accuracy would have done wonders here though.
I think we'll try and make the final ready for solskogen . less flyby and more stuff with better composition.
@hyde : but tell us how the segmented sphere is done. - isokadded on the 2006-05-04 23:40:18
- demo Amiga AGA lux aeterna luceat eis by Ephidrena
- @oswald : I agree, most things in this demo can be a lot faster than it is now. The biggest problem was that there were more features to implement than time to perfect them.
The planet is a sphere lookuptable using cylinder coordinates. The first lookup is for fetching the sphere's cylinder coordinates The second lookup is into a perturbation map which distorts the cylinder coordinates. The perturbation map has a multiplier to the lookup so that the details can be very dense compared to the resolution of the cylinder coordinates (note the very slow, but smooth rotation). The result of this is then used to look up into a 512x512 light texture. The result of this is blended with the background bitmap(halo thing) using a coverage factor, then this antialiased result is blended with the previous frame in familiar motionblur fashion. You can move the light around the planet using F9 and F10 for kicks :)..
An obvious optimization is that the coverage factor is mostly 1 or 0 apart from at the sphere border so some special casing of those spans would probably help some.
A neat feature would be to bilinear filter the perturbation map lookup so that the texels would be less visible, but the motionblur did pretty well in hiding the texels anyway.
Also.. NO PLANETS ROTATE AXIS ALIGNED WITH SCREEN BORDERS!!!! So some rotation in the raytracer precalculator would probably have made it a bit more believeable.
The texturemapper in this demo is a disgrace though. It does some work per pixel. U,V and fog coordinate interpolation + shadetable lookups for the fog most of the time. Also the textures are not 256x256 which is the most fitting size to avoid shifting and stuff. The worst part is that the textures are big but the horizontal span interpolation deltas do not have enough precision to interpolate smoothly across a texture of this size. :P Also the lack of perspective correction really shows.
Nexus 7 is in a league of its own :) The coolest is probably the ellipse rendering sphere with holes in it (or something). - isokadded on the 2006-05-04 17:42:42

- I've got a much better version of this demo right here already... too bad you can't have it. to those who don't like the music.. try substituting the track for any other song and see how bad an idea that really is :)

- embarassment is way to uexplored in traditional and modern art, but the demoscene prevails when it comes to invoking that certain feeling. Maybe a few matrix and booze references could make this even more pathetic though. Looking forward to someone topping this unique exploration of embarassment :)

- omg look at the anglemaps which seems to make the low poly models look very high poly and the black near fog and background coloured fog. and teh planet in the beginning was remarkably detailed compared to other table planets I have seen on amiga.. OMG WTF the edge of the planet is antialiased using atleast 4 samples. those leaves looked incredibly like the romantic leaves I used to watch while dancing in the autumn rain too and those shiny particles (which tint to blue!) in the woman doesn't look like the leaves at all! These textures are the most detailed I have seen on amiga.. they must be huge and not restricted by the usual 256x256 limitation. ANd listen to the obviously non protracker music where the noise has magically moved out of the audible range and has become dithered to oblivion by devious postprocessing filters. Well that was what struck me first when I watched this demo. then I realized that it is not as good as pc so therefore I will thumb it down.. what remains is to see which sceners MOVE to which platforms. It is important that you MOVE to psp for never to MOVE to atari.. If you move, you have moved and you may only move to places where you have not been before... or just move to the rhytm and to the beat and stomp your feet. not better than pc, but better than atari.

- even if I was pretty tired and alcoholized I figured from speaking with emoon that the ps2 is quite a beast. This features loads of optimizing for keeping the ps2 execution units busy. The vumeters are ace. As are the rainbow colours slipped in with the metal in places. The black blur/fog stuff at the beginning was very slick too.. Music was teh shit too, so whats with the complaining?

- 4k Amiga AGA Planet Loonies by Loonies [web]
- coolness. love the speech synth and some nice effects. I'm not much fan of humour in demos or references to classics (or matrix and such .. argh) , but as it is 4k I shall let it pass for this time :) Doesn't topple noxies favourite 4k spot for me.
Now bring on some true electro style 4k intro :) - rulezadded on the 2006-04-25 17:03:08
