- 256b MS-Dos Paranoia by Desire [web]
- She is paranoid, therefore she is constantly turning around ;) That's understandable, every now and then somebody she never sees opens a door, and closes it again ... until she laughs hysterically ^^
I'd agree to most of the critics, this is pretty bland and the rotation is monotone :/ We didn't have the time for anything better because ...
... on the other hand, it's not the *usual* 256 bytes ray caster. We went for 192 shades (64*pink,blue and white) to make a difference from the standard 64 colors black white. We went for a rendering approach that is actually pretty fast (should even run decent on a 486) instead of bruteforcing each pixel. Of course there is VSYNC and double buffering for maximum smoothness on real oldschool systems. Not to mention we never considerated sizeoptimizing the ESC check and return to textmode out as an option - manners, you know =)
Regarding the sound, nope, it's not random MIDI ;) it's a carefully selected subset of the SFX set with a special pattern, to generate a very defined atmosphere - see the commented source for more details.
All these things do require some space. It sums up. In comparison to the well known Wolf from 1999, "Paranoia" has actual depth (shading) - even if that looks blend - and does NOT use the famous XOR texture, as this has been done too often by now. Also, "Paranoia" has SFX. I'd agree though, that the slightly advanced graphical technical feats do not really add *that* much to the atmosphere. Maybe introducing colors and depth shading raises the expectation too much compared to simple black white XOR textures(?) And maybe rotation let's you expect a good camera-path(?) In short, adding features increases the change for disappointment, as it seemed to have happened here.
So, personally, i find it kind of "meh" that the attempts to break out the usual 256 bytes techniques earns a partial community "meh" in return, although i can reenact almost every opinion stated here.
Still i would say that it's way better to explore new ways in tiny intros than beating dead one trick ponies - even if the "meh" is strong in this one ;) - isokadded on the 2016-06-09 23:46:31

- Both what stingray and Buckethead said. The strangeness (?) of the music earns a weak thumb in my world ;)
