Nothing amazing but a lovely concept to run a demo in the dock.

Dock? What does this mean???

optimus: its the mac equivalent of the task bar on windows. Works just like this: http://jrgraphix.net/research/flash_dock.php

Dock demos are demos that run as a dock icon, 128x128 resultion at 32bit with transparency.

!!!!!!! (Even if I don't have a Mac to test it, after psonice's explanation)

Like a docked 128*128 icon ?? Mad indeed =)
Yup, this is the second dock demo (to my knowledge). Credits go to Sol / HSA for the initial dock output code.
doh.. i guess i saw them the wrong way round then :D

How much does a MAC cost? NOT! :)
p.s. Is there a MAC emulator to see this? NOT! ;P

I really need to see this. Wondering if Windows or Linux can do something similar, or even a demo in the desktop. I think there was an Amiga demo who did some demo effects upon the desktop..

errr
optimus: i'm pretty sure its possible to use the osx desktop as a rendering surface for demos. Some mac demos use a fullscreen borderless window instead of fullscreen mode, so its possible to work in other windows while they run. The interface in osx is opengl accellerated too, so its probably pretty fast to do interesting things like that.

I remember a few amiga programs that did funky effects in the workbench background, some with nice copper effects or plasmas. Windows can do the same (i'm sure theres an option in winamp to do visualisations on the desktop) but its fairly slow.

Macs have a load of interesting possibilities for messing with the gui, as its all opengl, and there's already a lot of nice effects going on (switch users and the screen rotates on the side of a cube to reveal the other users desktop, windows minimise like liquid, and the dashboard appears with a zoom blur...) but i think its not that easy to hook in and modify stuff.

Maybe someone can make a video of this °:)

a demo with a scroller on the workbench:
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=4033
It would theoretically be possible to port over to Windows or X11 with the transparency intact, but until they get their new rendering systems running, it would be a lot of work.

As for the desktop, it's possible to use it as an OpenGL target surface on OS X. There's a utility available to run accelerated screensavers on the desktop.
ROFL! Its a bit short but its only 300 somewhat kilobytes =D
