Very nice rendition. Now we also need a proper ST version :)

Stop-stop, it's original Bad Apple sound on STe?
rulez added on the 2017-12-10 13:41:35 by 100bit 100bit
I will release the source code later, you can disable blitter but the generated file is ~40% bigger. As on STF there is only 3 bitplanes needed and a reaaaaally lowered quality audio, it should compensate.
Well done.

Gotta vote up the weeb trash

huge file though

well you made a videoplayer play a quite large video that could be crunched way down if only the cpu of the poor atari could handle it ;P

Anyway, the result looks and sounds just like the original video in my ears (well, almost), and that is a technical achievement I can respect.

Also Im a sucker for Bad Apple ;P

Very cool conversion, edges seem to be antialiased.

A-MAZING achievement.

What other videos can be played?

And PLEASE, is it possible to include the subtitles, to make it in a KARAOKE mode?

A very good version of the thing that got old ages ago.

@zlew:
So is this the reason to thumb this amazing technical achievement down?
I am not too fond of BA, but I do know how much work dudes put in to it to make it best lookling on their platform. And this ALONE deserves respect.

Not to be a dick, but a 50MB streaming animation, while nice, is not much of an achievement, and shouldn't have been shown in the standard ST-compo...

Very nice version, smooth..

@Zlew I didn't say it in the demo but this year is the 10th anniversary of Bad Apple (the music) and next year will be the 10th anniversary of the original video. So yes, it's old. And it's a kind of benchmark. Some conversions are juste amazing. I was thinking of doing this conversion during maybe two years.

@britelite as I said elsewhere it started as a performance test and ended as an exercise to get back to 68k code. When I see your demos for instance I feel like a small old poop doing crappy code. Not to say I never did any 3D in my whole life.
That said I did it for fun and not for the competition, I wouldn't have cared of it not being shown in the ST compo since I originally planned a standalone release.
I don't really think it's a technical achievement, but maybe it's a dad achievement, it's actually quite hard to code when you have kids. Thumbs up to all parent coders.
The only thing I hope it may bring to the ST scene is to point out that you can have nice streaming audio. imho the soundtracks (pcm or ym) in recent ST demos are mostly boring :/

@sim karaoke was planned but I want to work on something else now. It needs some work but is totally doable, since the rendering takes around 30% of CPU/blitter time in average. You can play other videos but the code is optimized for this specific animation.
@fenarinarsa: don't get me wrong, I loved the demo, the conversion was awesome. but to be fair, I just thought it would have been better placed in the wild compo.

Wonderful conversion! Thanks!

For me Bad Apple is not like doom but rather like the "Hello World" of the demo scene. You can tweak it to the specific of your beloved platform and learn from that how your ideas work. And you can set your own limits and conquer them. This one if a nicely done version. Didn't expect it to be 4 planes when it first started, but that really pays off in term of smoothness.

50mb is too much, so what Britelite said.
But thumb up for doing it, the quality is good!

As a "Bad Apple!!" sizecoder I don't care about this being ~50 megs. No platform without "Bad Apple!!" :P

I'm watching the 'making of', it's very interesting, nice job -> thumb up !!

Heh. Port it to everything like Apple 2s, Atari 2600, etc. :P

Well, fuck me running. Now I've watched the "making of" video, and color me surprised but I didn't expect that much technique in a b/w streamed video. Until now I was sure it was just streaming frames directly to the graphics memory, but there's actually some process to it.

Too bad can't undo the thumb down, but on your next prod i'll give you two!!

Final version & source code available.

The final version is low-res and high-res compatible and the archive also contains smaller versions for slow HDDs.

Some bugs were also fixed and now it should be compatible with a lot more HDD drivers.
Really cool making of :)
