I wasn't even aware of the demoscene until fr08. I remember running it on my old PC and being mesmerised, even though it was running at 2 frames/sec.

Most memorable demos/intros (in order of when I first saw them):
Various C64 cracktros, running in various C64 emulators
fr-08 (farbrausch)
fr-019 (farbrausch)
fr-025 (farbrausch)
Squish (AND)
Heaven 7 (exceed)
Parsec
Ocean Machine (TBL)
Dead Ringer (Fairlight)
Debris (farbrausch)
Lifeforce (ASD)

and many more, which I can't remember right now.

9 fingers
Whammer Slammer
Kasparov
Fall Equals Winter, (just for the tune really.)
The first two opened my eyes to how good the Amiga scene was getting and the latter two was what got me into the PC scene.

There are a lot more, but I'd be here for ages

P.S. Media Error HAS to be played LOUD!

Arte by Sanity

I feel it's the perfect harmony of code, graphics, music and originality. Everything about the demo was revolutionary in some way.

Revelations by Cryptoburners

A beautiful slideshow which set a new standard for pixel artists and showed what sceners can achieve.

the ones that i remember affecting me in my early years:

Second reality / Future crew (could've been the first PC demo i saw)
Heartquake / Iguana (don't really know why i have so fond memories of this. maybe because it was also one of the first PC demos i ever saw)
Dope / Complex (jugi's soundtrack still gives me the shivers)
X14 / Orange (again a soundtrack thing)
Drift / Wildlight (the first intro i remember being cool and somewhat designey)
Paimen / Coma ('nuff said)
Timezone +13:00 / Eufrosyne (rather 'simple' and small, but man the atmosphere)
Blind / Eufrosyne (but just for the last effect. everything else in the intro is rather crap)
Saint / Halcyon & Da Jormas (the first "mixtape" demo i'm aware of. so pure, so raw)

I'm a bit surprised that nobody has yet mentioned this, but....

Mental Hangover by Scoopex

It really blew my mind when I saw it for the first time and it still is THE demo for me.
I guess it was the Red Sector Megademo that really grabbed me and lured me into the scene completely. Seven Sins, Mental Hangover, and of course Cebit 90 by Red Sector followed. The next milestone for me was Hardwired, Seeing is Believing, Humantarget and Desert Dream.

On PC I'd have to mention Unreal by FC, Art by Haujobb, Kings of the Playground, Deities, Debris and Lifeforce which all gave me "wtf"-moments of admiration.

Basicly all the amiga stuff from 87-88 was what lured me.. But i can't name a "main demo", there are fantastic ones on many platforms.
