Pirating Game Dev Tycoon Dooms Players to be Ruined By Piracy

category: offtopic [glöplog]
In an ironic twist, modified code in the cracked version of the game ensures that pirate's in-game progress is constantly ruined by rampant piracy:

Thanks to Shifter for pointing me to 'Vuvuzelas Blare on Pirated Copies of Michael Jackson: The Experience for DS' as well.

Older versions of Autodesk 3ds Max use a dongle for copy protection; if it is missing, the program will randomly corrupt the points of the user's model during usage, destroying their work.

ha. that's why i never finished my 3D!
Awesome!

From the notable example I still remember ZakMckracken.

The original page on the devs website had a few more examples of the problems people were reporting, and they were totally hilarious :D The bit where they share their figures and 90%+ of players were playing the pirate copy, and they haven't actually made much money, not so funny.

Their site is down now - I'm assuming because this has gone very viral, very fast, and they're getting hammered. Hopefully that means they're selling a lot of product too :D

Ah, and I thought that was the reason why all your models looked so bad!
i remember reading that a pirated copy of fruity loops would randomly lock all created projects in a password protected zip of some sort. similar to the locking of songs created with the demo versions. while ordinary cracked versions just infest the pc with a virus.

And ordinary bought versions infest the PC with copy protection crap. :) (highly depending on the software, of course. hello, eLicenser!)
people on reddit (LOL) says its a direct copy of the GameDev Story game on IOS. Which was a very good game.

Did a slots game for a company in the Mid East once. They bought ten licences, but we later found out that the guy had got someone else to crack it (it was minimally dongled with some third-party thing, wouldn't have taken much effort) and had dozens of machines running. What he _didn't_ realise was that if it detected a crack the game would run at 1000%... :)

AFAIK (and in this particular case, I think I do know :-) ), this was due to a badly done crack which corrupted the memory (and happened in a lot of programs with those kind of dongles, just in this particular case the outcome was corrupt indices) . There was a proper crack released after that.

This was for 3DStudio 4 though, not Max (but I'm sure it's referring to that one :-) )

Today I thought, why play a game where you are developing a game instead of developing a game :)

And years after, I finally understand why I thought the GTA4 controls were so horrible and I erased the whole thing :P

optimus: are you saying you'd rather do the real thing than play the game... and then applying the same logic to GTA4?

Somebody call the greek police, quick :D
