Demos from pre-released scene songs

category: general [glöplog]

Here's a topic I hope isn't as dumb as the other ones I used to start when I was younger...

I've been listening to a beautiful musical piece (which is a scene release), which made me think "I wish this featured as the soundtrack of a demo for the platform it was made for"...

So, here you go: do you know demos that were actually built from a scene song released before, rather than the other way around?

yes, there are a few. some more known then others.

but i guess a lot of those demos that used previously released tracks were also hunting for a type of soundtrack and ended up finding that track instead of asking someone for a brand new track.

guess the most famous one in demoscene is probably ceasefire / cncd & fairlight

speaking for myself, i had a few of my tracks being used for demos after being released on some EP or album (some of my collaborations with Visualice, Kosmoplovci and Still), also navis reused the soundtrack i had made for one of my minimalartifact demos for this ASD demo: anoxia redux.

The music of this one was released in 2013, the demo itself is from 2019.

Back in the C64 days, it was common that productions used music that was released before and even used in other prods. Like Page's Soldier of Fortune cover, Laxity's Crosswords for example. And people were also using music and gfx ripped from games too.
And then of course there is the case of a 4-channel Amiga MOD being reused as the soundtrack to highend PC demo, which is going the complete opposite direction than gaspode's example :D
how about the soundtrack of this being reused for this?

infact the only demo i made (so far) which was released in 2017 used an xm module that was released in 2016.. :p

There must be a thousand examples of this. Dunno if exactly "built" upon, but most of the prods i was involved with, the tune existed (and was released) before the demo...

also, occasionally musicians release their demo soundtrack in the music compo as well (at the same party), therefore technically that soundtrack was pre-released as well :D

Happened to me inadvertently in this production. I received the module in about 1992 from the musician, but couldn't use it for technical reasons and because it was too large. In 2017 I was able to overcome all issues and finally realize a demo with it. It was only then that I learned that it was used in the meantime, in this production. And here it sounds like it's played with CIA speed 125 instead of the original 120, which was the main reason that held me back using it in the first place. Darn!

I wish I knew even the basics of coding (in Assembly or even in AMOS) because if I knew I would have started coding a demo from a song.

But the learning curve is too steep, considering I want to use an old platform such as the AMIGA OCS/ECS.

Feel free to compile a list.

SoDa7: well, you should definitely read a book on programming first, to know the basics, but after that initial spot you can check a couple of seminars on modern amiga coding, i remember one by noname/haujobb, one by kiero/madwizards, and i think the lemon guys also did something when they opensourced their development toolchain. So technically speaking nowdays is the best time to get into programming for the Amiga, less steep curve then 20 years ago.

@SagaMusix: Did Cocoon use a modplay as well or did they convert it to mp3?

I created the list. Actually, it's correct to say that it should be considered only the first time the demo used the song, otherwise the list becomes too long.

@gaspode: Megademo.dat contains an MP3 ;)
The soundtrack from More are from the 90s, while the demo is from 2018.

I've done it several times. The advantage of this approach is in that you have a structure provided by the track and you also can get to know the track intimately and come up with specific visuals for every aspect of the music. When you are trying to start from visuals, it is difficult to match things at the same level.
