Judging code

category: general [glöplog]
OTOH, I think people like Chaos who invented Rotozoomer, coded Werkkzeug and probably did some other very innovative things I'm not aware of deserve their high rating for their pioneering creativity.

adok: however, all the disgustingly ugly werzkeug prods released by non-fr members just go to show how much of the quality of the fr releases were down to their art department.

you can't judge code alone - that's correct - but you can judge how much it contributes to the overall effect.

Smash: Yes, that's a good argument.

Anyway by watching a demo only you can't judge a coder, you could make a megakiller effect just to be f****d by the "talented" artist (gfx or music) either by giving it bad color scheme, design, crappy music...
I think besides of the demo itselfs, the scene lacks that interviews with coders ala "RAW" or "ROM" :), so the coders could speak of their effects, demo etc...
Adok? ;)

Well, I'd like to do that if somebody (I mean, a coder) is interested.

wot diz :) namevoting ..? :=) "raw" used to be a famous disk mag on amiga500 and "rom" used to be a famous sprayer in bremen/germany (also a member of essence/amiga..:) )

on topic: judging code depends on what you except of it. don't expect a highly portable demo to be highly tweak to platform specific extensions for example ;) also i wanna second smash: judging demos is all about the impression you get when you watch it; if it looks ql and its small (say less than 4mb) then ok..if it is >4mb then lets give a twinkle and honor the artistic performance (yes the scene gets diffuse nowadays..)

mnemonix, my only agenda is that we should try talking about things we really relate to on pouet, instead of going off the tangents all the time ;)

Years before? What demo?

Adok: JSYK, Chaos did NOT made the first rotozoom in a demo. There was a rotozoom in the Syntax Terror, and the Maggie 10 intro ( w. motion blur even ) respectively 2years and 4 months before the World of Commodore.

Of course that does not hinder Chaos's impact on the scene.

It's either funny or ironic how the prevailed facts shadow true demo history. There was a popular belief when I joined the scene that chaos was the first to invent the rotozoomer, and since I was listening to that thing and didn't knew shit about the ST, I kept repeating it too as a fact. Since something becomes a popular belief, it's spreaded so fast that tends to hide the true facts and that's something that sometimes worries me, because it shapes a diferrent reality that becomes so true when everyone around you repeats the same (wrong) fact. Hopefully I knew since a late thread on Pouet the truth about the rotozoomers, so the only thing I can do now is to thank you another time for insisting on the true facts for the cause of preserving history and also showing off that Atari was the first :)

In any case, if somebody has done pioneering work, this deserves being voted for in the charts IMHO.

Finally an interesting thread at Pouet!

We need to fix this problem as soon as possible! Let me start it with hijacking the discussion.

Imo, a much more important question than the ones about the rotozoomer and similar nonsense is that who invented TEH PIG? Or, which one was the first: pig, or BABY PIG? Can Chaos code a pig? Will there be pig in the next version of werkkzeug? In which year will SIGGRAPH accept the pig as the new utah teapot? At which version number will GLUT include the pig modell? When will the pig skin shading modell be the standard example in CG textbooks? Which will be the first university offering a postgraduate pig course? Is the demoscene dead or pig?

The pig singularity is near! Pigistance is futile!
