• ah i see. i guess a "real" universal compression routine for the text wouldnt fit the size.

• uhm well... can you put ANY text in those 296 chars or is it all about finding the right scroller-text?
  As i understand it, PETSCII goes up to $FF so 1 char = 1byte hence theres some sort of (simple) compression involved to make 296 chars fit in 256 byte (+ scroller code). if theres compression involved, the efficiency should vary with the content (ie repetition of certain letters/patterns, etc).
  or am i completely wrong and theres something else going on here? i really dont have much clue about c64 code.
