This one is one of the top PC-demo-productions from this years BP. A shame that it is a invitation and therefore probably won't win...but it had some great grafix and music [and also nice ideas!]

Doesn't attack my eyes with huge load of eye-candy 3D scenes? That's beautiful idea for me.

And the deal between music and visual concept, brings my mind some demoscene refreshment.

Keep it up.

I don't know why everybody is so exited. So please pardon me, when I say I think the demo is quite boring. Is It just because its a "farbrausch"?

Watching the stream I kind of thought "this is just an SVG player" but watching it at home I see it's much more than that. It's incredibly well directed with great sync and coherence between the visuals and music, and it's attention grabbing from start to finish. I bet it was an absolute blast on the big screen. Well done!

Beautifull trip. I love this one. I don't know how you produced such terrible thing, but even if it's a flashplayer like ( with anti-aliasing and motion blur ) you did a massive and excellent work. Big Big UP.

Just rewatched it live on my PC... still: Wow!

Just some technical notes:
After having installed the last DX redist (d3dx9_36.dll) On my system (centrino 1.5GHz, 1GB ram, radeon 9700m) the demo works really like a charm @ 1280x800 by disabling all the nifty features like multisampling & motion blur (if I enable motion blur the demo just crashes, anyway LCD monitor just provides some for free :)

The odd thing is that if I run the demo in windowed mode it loads blazing-fast but if I choose fullscreen it takes a loooong time (1.5 min).

Still: congratulations, really a killer invitation!

I really like this. Ok, somewhat non-coherent, not that unexpected and the music don't really fit 100% in all places - but this is really nice for beeing a PC demo. Really graphical and with a good flow - who cares about the technicalities. I hope the PC scene moves in this direction.

Got it to run when I downloaded d3dx9_36.dll and put it in the same dir as the demo.

I seen this demo on the stream and now on my own PC. Great work. Sometimes it reminds me a little about how demos were made in the 90's by melon design.
And some stuff 'inspired' by ASD I am sure..
None the less good efford..

p.s. those americans should be proud on this to :)

to all those who say that this is "flash", by which i believe you mean "it could have been done in flash", i beg you to try. once you land in the pit of floating point degeneration despair, you will understand that such stuff looks much easier to do than it is (yes, i learned that the hard way, too ;).

Yes yes! It's uber. Thoroughly enjoyed it and loved every single moment of it. Even though the style is a derivative of neuro's previous demo, it's clear that the concept can be revisited and made a lot better. I loved how I couldn't expect what I'd see next and the frantic pace.

Now I don't have a problem with 3d or 2d.. all is welcome, but I'm a sucker for a well produced fresh demo, and this is clearly one of them.

Solid rules, but I'm not sure it feels like a compo winner to me. The first half felt a bit too familiar perhaps, but the second half (and the intro part) were great.
rulez added on the 2008-03-25 14:55:35 by psonice psonice
I like how farbraush lately has done so many "none-3d-flybys" after debris.
Even though this demo obviously is a neuro-coproduction, ofcourse.

In the bus home from breakpoint I had the masagin-tune hanging in my ears all the way. Love the style and syncing. Colours are daring, but imo great.
Only minus is the rgb-lines-from-center-thing that is ugly and doesn't fit the rest of the demo.
rulez added on the 2008-03-25 15:06:25 by lemmus lemmus
lemmus, the rgb-lines-from-center-thing actually works only on a quite high resolution... i think i picked it because of the weird moirée effects that build up when you keep staring at the center object for some time.

I... I feel... feel... I feel hipnotised... I... I got... I got the urge need of visiting nvision08. I don't know why... ... maybe it's cos all those colours poping out from the flower part, maybe all the colorful rotating things.. maybe the japanese part, which gives you a fun feeling... But no, I'm not japanese, neither I was in the war, that trick shouldn't affect me... Why is it then? Someone in the marketing department is trying to trick me.... Maybe I should we worried, it's too atractive, too much. I may even be a trap, it's like getting a candy from a stranger... My mother told me not to do it. But damn, the candy looks so sweet and colorful... what to do, what to do. And those skeletons... what to do.. soooo tempting. Dear god, sorry to annoy you again... but... what should I do?

Boring in the beginning, but then getting more and more bombastic, when you have in mind it is a DEMO and not a flash animation. At last a demo (invitro?) with _some_ effects after those years of 3D world shit. Thumbs up for that C= and Amiga part and the fx. Thumbs down about the rest. I'm in doubt about the NVScene. Party in the U.S.? Hmm, does anyone have money to travel there? I gues some people do, but what for? And second thing - does NVScene have something to do with nVidia? -> commerciality of the scene??? Elitarism? I don't know. But I wouldn't be happy if demoparties and demos ended in the $$$ shit like e.g. pro-gaming. But maybe I understood it wrong.

mindblowing. just because the effect is similar to that in "die ewigkeit schmerzt" does not mean that it's the same demo; according to the downthumbers' comments, all demos with 3d scenes are the same demo too, and "nothing new".

i've heard people say that this is incoherent, but i disagree. it's a great trip.

I do not think that this demo was name-voted. At least I am pretty sure that I would have RULEZ'ed it no matter which group had been behind it (and no matter whether the LOON stock had been going up or down, hehe).

I am more doubtfull about the ASD-demo. It was more subtle, and I am afraid that it would have got a lower rank if it was submitted by an unkown, or even if it had not been showed last.

maybe i should tell a bit about the circumstances, so you guys understand better how it went.

we had only three months to do this thing. there was no werkkzeug involved. i took chaos' new altona subsystem (which is going to be open source one day) and added a new 2d engine on top. i extended the svg compiler i wrote for "die ewigkeit schmerzt" and wrote a script compiler (msgc) to be able to describe object chains/trees and transitions quickly. i wrote a deductive camera system. i solved the problem of infinite zooming once and for all. this already swallowed a lot of time.

regarding the motion blur i started off with nvidias shader based motion blur that i found in a paper, but found it to be worthless. instead i followed chaos' suggestion to just render the scene 16 times. that gave the best results, even if this would mean a massive fillrate sucker. we also got a FSAAx16 for free out of this (and you could also do blur and depth of field with it, but i found no good use for it yet.)

later on i got cp and tournesol to join me so we could get more content done. i had about 60% of the demo finished when i arrived at the party place. the demo wouldn't play through at all, but we had like 16 unfinished scenes which all followed the concept roughly. thursday to sunday we kept adding up and polishing the scenes until it became what you see now.

i am aware that there is a lot of stuff in it which could be done better. i apologize for the lack of time we had. you are all right, and we are going to try harder next time. i suppose i'm going to do this 2D stuff until nobody wants to see it anymore, and see how far i can push up the looks, and how many ideas i can stuff in in the future.

there are playback controls in the demo, btw. TAB turns on debug view, then you can use SPACE to halt the demo, and left/right arrow keys to skip forward/backwards (in pause mode it is slow motion). takes a little time for the player to react the first time because the track is being prepared for seeking.

i am going to release all SVG content in a few weeks, including the scripts and parts of the build system that i used.

@ paniq: Is there any chance for a final with selectable lower resolutions (like 1024x768 or 800x600)?

This demo and the one from Einklang look great but the high resolutions are quite demanding for gfx-cards with 256 mb of vram. Here is hoping that in the future the Altona engine will support some lower resolutions as well...

I liked the asd a lot more for its consistency, but this is still one great demo. i love how elements of tunes i used to (well...still) love found their way into the soundtrack.

It could have done with fewer effects i reckon as it varries a lot from absolutely jawdrop visuals to plain "filler", and it pulls the overall a bit down.

First of all I want to give my respect for the music. I really love the soundtrack and would appreciate the mp3 link if possible.

As for the demo, I was disappointed. I've got nothing against 2d demos, but I would like a bit more than scrolling and zooming vector graphics. This looked too much like your average flash anim to me...with one or two coder colours thrown in there.

It's not awful, but I don't like it.

Well, personally, I think that this demo shows how unbelievably multi-style FR can be, especially when quality is concerned. You ppl are sick, very. And, sure, I like that, who doesn't? If I hadn't known that it's FR, and saw things like Basso Continuo, Debris, Popular demo or Konsume or at the end almost whatever else, I would say that it can't be from the same group...

All my 5 thumbs up :)

who prefers it with motion blur? who prefers it without? and WITH motion blur, do you prefer closer to 30fps or 50/60fps?

i FINALLY figured out what about the motion blur looked wonky. er, correction. motion/film blur effect. (imo... amiwrong?) it's the fact that the ENTIRE OBJECT (or at least the fastest moving part of it) is blurred, not just the trailing edge only.

FOR EXAMPLE, if a square is moving from left to right at a moderately fast speed, if a film shutter isn't fast enough, the left side of the square will be blurred, but not the right. or if it IS moving so fast, the right would be less blured than the left.

i think. (disclaimer, i've only taken single class in one semester about film/photography)

ruttin' badass demo, tho. i LOOOOVE the "'tude" in this demo :)

plonk420, actually i spent a lot of time tweaking the motion blur, and it is exactly the same you get as in regular cam recording.

contrary to intuition, an object passing the cam at a constant pace will be blurred equally on both sides. only when the object would be speeding up or down right in this frame, one trail would be longer than the other.

think about it: the camera shutter opens for a short period of time in which the object passes the lens very rapidly. in this case the position of the object distributes equally over the entire distance it moved, and while it appears to be translucent, its volume stretches. this equals to taking a lot of shots in a short amount of time and calculating the median cut of the frames recorded.

isnt that in line with your world view of interconnected minds? :)

ferris: just looked up hugo elias motion blur, and i think that's the method i used. i did a supersampling of 16/8 images per frame (with a bit of overshooting because it looks better), which is adaptive to the framerate. each image is shifted to form a 60° 4x4 or 4x2 antialias kernel as well. when the image is not moving, the lines appear anti-aliased. there is another effect you can do with this, which was not used, which is blurring and depth of field.

so with supersampling images, you kill several birds with one (cpu heavy) stone: realistic motion blur, anti-aliasing, depth of field.

I love this demo. It's so upbeat and colorful. The music is tight too. Finally sceners are really starting to add some cool guitar parts to the soundtrack instead of only featuring that crappy Euro-pop garbage. It gets REALLY old. Glad to see the newer shift to guitar too.

This must be the best piece of art I've ever seen on my whole life. The first scene (The monk one) is pure gold.

I did just read the HUGI 35 article about how this demo was born and I've got to say I'm pretty impressed... paniq, although you got stressed that much the demo quality is superb and it's got extra Shpongle awesomeness (When I watched the demo I though "Hmm... Sounds and looks Shpongly")

This is totally gonna be my first CDC. I'm in love with this demo. Watched it for like 50 times.

kaoD: it was in some way also a homage to Shpongle, yes :)

I am not so fond of the first few seconds, but I really do love the rest of it. I doesn't look like the usual FR style by the way.

My favourite parts are the skeletons, the flags (simple yet very engaging), and the kind of utopic clouds and stars scenes.

So for all thoses, big thumbs up!

Very, very beautiful.

Only point of criticism: The endless zoomers are a bit too many in there. But the rest is so great (also the music!) it totally makes up for that.

First things first, palette is outstanding!

This prod had me inspired on so many levels, from the way the logos in the beginning are being "deleted" to the flags which I almost implemented in a open source game as language selector to the zoomy bit which still feels so fucking amazing.
Also having the feeling that this was all hand drawn in SVG, and maybe some Python magic has been applied makes be giddy with excitement (even as a Perl dude).

I can't describe how good this prod is, other than the loader promised - have a pleasant journey it said, and wow - it was indeed <3
