No comments? One of Orange's finest releases, featuring 18-bit color "fakemode" for the first time ever. Too bad noone can get it running anymore. :(

This is the no.1 stunner, great effects, outstanding graphics and a killer track by dune. Superb demo.
Phoenix, Just run it on a 486 w/ GUS and it works. :)
Still perhaps my favourite Orange demo. It's some sort of magic.. must be weird fakemodes.

I just love this demo very much.
Those fakemodes were to die for, and that soundtrack....it's no coincidence it's still in my playlists =)

Eh? :D
A damn fine demo, and the fakemode absolutely rock. Sorry about that I didn't include a screen of it in the anim, but they were just so goddamn large... Sometimes I wish that the pouët.net screenshot-limit would be larger...

fractal: I meant _almost_ noone.. I can get it running and I'm sure a few other diehards like you can too.
Yeah, it's tough getting those multi-screen shots in 64k.. you can always try reducing the image size, or number of colors in each pic, but sometimes it's better to just lose some screens.

Absolutely one of the best demos for pc. It even works on my current PC :)
For a long time I considered this as the best demo ever. It's just fucking cool.
Great and it runs fine on my 733p3/256MB/GF3/GUS Classic, although I have to reboot to exit it.
the only place where I've seen x14 exiting cleanly was Mekka & Symposium 2001 demoshow.. how did you guys do it?:) For me it always crashes at the end.
Gotta love it. The soundtrack by dune is just awesome. Fakemodes aren't quite my thing but the design makes up for them.
love it
love it
also love it. The fakemode has been the reincarnation of god.
Propably the best demo soundtrack ever and the demo itself also kicks ass. My all time Orange favourite.
This has got to be my all time orange favourite as well.. It features probably the 2nd best demo soundtrack ever... right after 'dope' ofcourse:D
one of the best dos demos for sure....
the defining moment.
superb.
superb.
owww.. it's just fucking awesome :D
Excellent audio and effects. rules.
\o/
*luv* yeah, it's one of the best!
Very, very good.
one of my favourites from the dos times...
i can see my voice
is it (isn't it suppose to be IT IS) red green and blue
just art
no complex vectors
no magic environment map
no tricky gouraud
i'd say it's my favourite demo

just plain fucking rules.
Put it on the next Mindcandy DVD featuring PC releases? Pretty please? :)
I don't remember much of it, but just looking at that screenshot makes my spine shiver.

It's on MindCandy Volume 1, Kickin' it oldskool.
oh yesh, one of my top 10 back in the day =)
Yeah, indeed it is, I checked my Mindcandy. I wonder what demo I was talking about... anyway, this is cool :)
let me make a bet and say that you meant Couloir 14, Coded by X.
gorgeous music, graphics and style - the way demos were ment to be made.
honestly speaking, this one rocks!
Runs in my GUS now!
Gorgeous!
Simply X14!
Runs in my dvd player now, Thanks Mindcandy
It's a beauty

Nice fake colors.
What real demos are supposed to look and sound like.
awesome!
x fourteen - the demo.
Luv that mode-switching. Good old VGA days :) nVidia & ATi suxx ;)
oops, needs a thumb
Roxx.
Some amazing logos, but a really shit demo!
What's with those ugly scan lines?

is it red green and blue!
Nice, runs ok in dosbox.
I like it :)
oh yes.
rather boring, but Dune's classic soundtrack saves the day
my eyes and ears say that everything in this one is beautiful, great classic mid90s demostuff.. would have loved to have seen that back when it was released.
still gives me magic moments for the music alone
Great
Fantastic. Clever videomode hacks, obnoxious orange style, excellent music/demo synchro.
brilliant demo. the soundtrack is very good!
Totally overrated.
Good one, highly overrated though
Missing thumb.
excellent!
not my fave orange but still orange enough.
yay!
For the music!
Why didnt I thumb this shit up. Now I have. First good pc-productions ever.
Happy days! The golden PC DOS age.
.
Damn nice music
Pure beauty
!
awesome music
Nice demo heard bracket talk about it on the Demoscene doc
the fins should find someone to write english subtitles for that doc.
there are subtitles on the youtube videos (enable closed captions)
<3
fresh from 1995
Still a classic, mostly due to dune's superb soundtrack tho.
what a demo :)
Clean music track, love the effects.
Classic demo
even today the soundtrack is just magic ...
love it.
totally works even today, and great music
immortal!
Very nice prod, too bad it's gus only
Always come back here, love the music... :)
I was struggling to have this running on an old DOS machine, and found out that it will not run on my machine when on a D: partition. It does with the same config when copied on the C:
Good, music, interesting effects with pixels put properly. Stylish demo in the spirit of the 1995/1996 PC demo scene..
Crazy...

Crazy...
Creative use of unusual display modes, great music, great style, excellent flow.
my favorite orange demo
yes
Crazy Stuffff :).
Never was big fun of this scan-line fake mode in some demos. However I see that historically that must be the first one to do it? I do rewatch it and I see either scanline effects or lowres blocky, not liking the looks of it enough, however the music is good.
I wish something was still as magical as watching this for the first time back in the 90s. Or now.
Pretty nice
cool
The intro is so good, it's like Dope's ominous intro but better, obviously executed better than Solstice's clunky prerendered text on a black background, though the music in Solstice flows better with the "key" changing between patterns and it more smoothly leading up with the more ambient and deeper instruments coming in before hitting you with the proper opening, Dope had the courtesy of fading out the music before starting again, which I think worked very well for the demo, but in this demo after all of this build up, has these synths come out of nowhere and it's a bit jarring. I think it might also depend on the mixing because some video captures are completely fine and it actually somewhat works, while when I went the demo on DOSBox-X or listen to the soundtrack on OpenMPT it sounds sounds weird.
As for the Fakemode color, they truly need some sort of blurring, if you watch a clean run-through it just hurts your eyes. I'm a bit skeptical that the intro needed Fakemode, I know it's just to blend with the next effect seamlessly and that does look good. I think it might have been more cool to not give away the effect immediately, have hoplite's and dune's credits come in all normal, and then have der piipo be all fakemoded and transition to that. Overall I think Solstice does Fakemode better than X14, as the colors are brighter and more vivid so less straining on the eyes, and also there aren't these annoying black bars on the bottom/top of the screen, wait canonically does this mean this demo is in 16:9?? I like the 262144 colors text, reminds me of "THIS IS UNREAL" "7800 PHONG polys", and I think they're done nice.
Clock Tower by Der Piipo is utilized well, the tunnel I feel pretty ehh towards, especially when I think of Solstice's, but the Hornet commentary gives props for it apparently still running well on potatos, so that's in a way impressive, but I thought the whole point of the scene is to do that and then add more ontop to take advantage of the extra computing power? The feedback red gygas portal effect IS SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL OMG, WHY DIDN'T MORE DEMOS DO THIS????
Is this a jab towards Jmagic of Complex? :)
There's no mention of Valhalla, which makes sense as by this point in time they've done pretty much nothing, though I can feel some inspiration that Valhalla must've gotten from these demos to their future ones, Solstice would not have been made without this paving the way, that's for sure. Honestly I kinda want to know what's Valhalla's deal with Orange, as the only mentions of them are by Optix in the Soft Project where he apologizes to and Orange member who never contributed to their demos according to demozoo, and H0l writing a short snippet about them in a magazine, so sad we'll never know what Sandman's and Big Jim's thoughts of Hoplite, Dune, and the guy who made Jmagician.
