at the compo i found it polished but dull, but after reading the infofile i have to give it a fat thumb nevertheless.

could be better but still deserves a thumb up

The style and music were not really my cup of tea, but in their own terms, they were very very cool, and gave me the impression that you guys put a hell lot of work into making it. Oh and it rocked the bigscreen too. Thumb up!

über top polished demo hehe
anyways the 3D is nice
I like it

heh, the message is that there are Arabic terrorists in space? (the font seems arabic at least :P)

Nice content tho.

It crashes when the probe is approaching the planet (at 133297ms or something), but what I saw thus far was damn excellent for a science buff like me. I'll thumb it now and praise you more when I see the rest of the demo.

(win xp, 1gb of RAM, x600 pro with catalyst 05.8)
rulez added on the 2005-11-07 17:20:54 by Preacher Preacher
oh yeah, it doesn't really crash.. it just stops updating the visuals. The music plays fine, and I can quit the demo by pressing esc.. if I try to fast forward past the point, I get garbled visuals.

With no fucking doubt, best demo in the compo. Good work, Sector Omega, this is your best demo, imho!

have you ever heard about mipmaps?
or content?
Used to be a big fan of The Cosmos so had high expecations and the demo started surprisingly well (on the second try), but i expected a slightly more grandiose climax.
The thumb goes for the music and the amount of work.

++ great, powerful music
+ good 2dgfx

-- ugly 3d-models

imho are the visuals too steril for the poweful soundtrack

still very polished and worth a thumb up
rulez added on the 2005-11-07 19:11:03 by v3nom v3nom
Some very nicely designed screens and cool music. Unfortunately the visuals stop several times for 5-6 seconds and not because it's swapping (1g ram here).
rulez added on the 2005-11-07 19:56:30 by zoom zoom
yup, a pity they have such a busy life nowadays and can't dedicate more time to demoscene.
I found something missing in this demo but don't know what, even if I appreciate it has lots of efforts (or at least, textures :D)
In any case, I definitely loved the music. By the way I was wondering before the party when would sectoromega release something "cosmic"... hehehe! congrats in any case, I liked it.
just go on guys and your demos will be better and better. use less photos, texts, facts and more demoish things

imo a lot of work put in the wrong concept.
added on the 2005-11-07 20:08:02 by bruce bruce
The code left me a bit sad due to too low-poly and static meshes for a 3d card, but the music really saved the day. Also I found strange the scanned gfx but now reading the info I realize they are a proper fit. all things considered... +2 -1 = thumbs up.

The demo from BCN101
rulez added on the 2005-11-07 20:48:45 by sergeeo sergeeo
This is way better than the winning demo. I still have to check the other compo entries to see if it deserved the 1st place.

About the demo itself, I found it "beautiful" and stilish, as all other Sector Omega prods. Music is great as usual. If I had to complain about something, I would say that code is a bit weak, and the demo stops sometimes for no apparent reason (and it isn't swapping).

All together this is a thumb up. But be aware that I now have high expectations, so you'll have to earn the next thumb ;).

Congratulations!!! Sector Omega rulez! :)
Idea & Design: Very good but I want more coding effects and a lot of little objects filling the screen :)
Object 3D: good, except that thing with spikes... too much simple and foolish...
Music: Absolutely amazing! JosSs, te sales! haha... the beginning seems Purple Motion, I love that "tubeBass" filtered. Some distortion in explosions maybe... Cool cool, esa coop!! hahaha :)

Enhorabuena SectorOmega.

a demo obviously done with a lot of care and work ... well done. It s nice to see people investing that much of their time in a project. It s rare. Resect for that.

This demo is very good, maybe the only demo I really wanted to see again after the party.
Josss' music is, of course, impressive... It's just like a real Sci-fi movie OST, with some oldschool feeling.
Graphics, code, etc are Ok, despite the huge memory usage.
rulez added on the 2005-11-07 23:20:13 by herotyc herotyc
Very good one!! specially the music!!
Good script and concept in general... but.. I have the feeling that some scenes have lack of something that I still don't know... :/

anyway... very very good work!!!
rulez added on the 2005-11-07 23:30:58 by xphere xphere
ok, i finally was able to watch it (more or less) on another computer..

I liked parts with that shadow in the background, like 2d scenes, but also they were empty, what about moving the background? The part with that demosceneish object, what that object means inside the demo?

Music is quite cool, direction is cool as well, effects aren't :(

thumbs up! you're getting there! :)

Although I can definately see that a lot of work was put into this, I need some innovation to keep me happy these days.

I can understand the authors being dissappointed, but I probably agree with the voting this year.

I have to agree with Lee and Rebuto on this one. You can definitely see they invested some time in making this, but it just doesn't feel convincing. There's a lot more space-oriented 3d-scene players around, and they do it better.

That, and the guitars really turned me off.

A nice surprise. Well,. I didn't find it boring but really nice and very well presented from the beginning till the end. Perhaps it's the theme and the great music that makes it for me! Pitty that it bugs in my Radeon at my home PC and also eats too much memory..

In my modest opinion this demo deserved to won, yero you see? a coup de coeur right now?
The winning demo from Limp Ninja was pretty interesting in the side of code, but does not fits with and overall conjuntion and assemble of GFX,Music, code like this one the message , anyway, I accept this message, rather than the message of Limp Ninja leader at prize ceremony.

Cheers yero and JoSS don't let this result dis-encourage you!

Really impressive graphics, script and music! Maybe the flight could have more polygons in the anthenna (it was the only 3D object in the screen and you can still notice the polygons).

In my oppinion this demo does not need more effects than it have, why adding something that will break the atmosphere? And yes, I agree with JaK :)

This is, definitely, hard work. Congratulations! :D

Freezes as the ship reaches the planet, then continues with a spike-ball thing, but obviously not the way it should look (its untextured, with the lower half of the screen flashing black + white). xpsp2, dual 3ghz xeon, 2gb ram, quadro fx 1000.

Haven't seen it, have read the .nfo, and am thumbing because I think that the reason for making the demo + finishing and presenting the demo deserve a thumb up. If it doesn't have enough explosions for you go watch TV and complain that they don't show anything new there. I would like an osX version so I can watch it (:

I wouldn't like SO to change their style. They definitely have a style of their own and I like it. They put shiny polish on the visuals. What this demo is missing is not style... it's missing something else... it's like jazz, "if you have to be explained what jazz is, you ain't never gonna know". :)

I recognize the load of work that was put into this and many people love it, that's all that matters. :) Your prods are getting better all the time, keep it up. :)

I'm glad to see that people likes the demo, there was put lot's of effort and time on it. :) I'll liked to have more time to polish it... just to add more dezign in some scenes. :-/ Next one, better one. :D

Someone spent a lot of time on this, but it is so pretentious that it is close to embarassing to watch it :) It's a bit like reading scene poetry without scene poetry. I coin the phrase 'spanish invisible scene poetry' for this demo. The rgba paradise intro has it too. All is full of hard work, but also all full of non engaging content. Looking forward to the next one though.

As already said, it's easy to see you spent a lot of time on this. But dunno, it somehow didn't entertain me, it lacks a certain something.
Anyway, some parts were great (some subtle effects mainly) and josSs as always composed a great soundtrack, congrats.

This one would normally be a piggy-demo for me, but this one actually had the scariest amount of stuff that i have been planning to put (or did it already) in a demo. Not so well executed though and not the most original ideas, but i still liked it in a very very strange way.
rulez added on the 2005-11-14 16:46:01 by kurli kurli
Very, very nice graphics and music (I have yet to hear a tune by JosSs I DIDN'T like...) and concept, except for a few things: Every time a piece of the plaque appeared during the 'analysis' scene, my computer froze for a few seconds. Also, there were a LOT of strange clipping issues with the Pioneer probe.
(nerd mode on)
Lastly, as an astronomer I feel obligated to point out that Pioneer 10 is actually heading for Aldebaran (68 light years away) and will take 2 million years to get there, not 15,000. Well, unless it falls into a time warp or slingshots around something. I'm guessing you knew that because you did enough research to find the date it was pronounced dead...

At last I had time to fix the bug in ATI cards. Sorry for the delay, and thanks to trace and to veronica for testing. Well, the fixed demo is in the same server, with the same filename:

http://www.sectoromega.org/files/sectoromega-themessage.rar

(scene.org servers will have it updated in a few days i think)

And now some comments..
Slummy, I use the extension gl_texture_rect, which doesn't support mipmapping, so I knew about mipmapping, but couldn't use it.

Crusader, if you had read the .nfo file, you would've read a message specially for you ;) I knew that some astronomer will point it out.. so... yes, i already knew Pioneer 10 will reach Aldebaran in two million years :)

And last, greets to the people who liked the demo, and specially big hugs for the ones who supported us during the party :)

a cinematic demo and well done. some colors are simply ugly (eg. the planet), but the design is up to the standards most of the time. i don't mind that the story speeds up and slows down sometimes - it makes it a bit like the oldschool megademos with multiple parts. it's such a pity that the right arrow key does not work during the loading screen :)

Yeah... I just played it again and... Ooops. Looks like I owe you an apology. (Though in my defense I did think it was intentional since you'd gotten everything else right... including, had I looked more carefully, Aldebaran.)

That part with the probe entering that solar system, with the alien font and all, was really cool, and the whole demo built up nicely up until that point, but after that the whole thing went kind of flat and uninteresting. The music and the whole concept save this demo from utter ruination, though, so piggy.
