YEAH!!
maybe technically-best 64k music ever. great textures, models and atmosphere indeed, and especially great direction!

Technically very good. Too bad that enemies to frag are not avalable yet... I'd like a custom secret mode in the final :)

now that's a "the. product."-inspired intro if i ever saw one. :) looks okay but the horrible "scary music" destroys it all.

Ah, I was gonna ask why it did some weird things on my Radeon, but Vulture Explains It All.

Long loadingtime but then...
First I was wondering, why people are getting this crazy at tUM when the first scenes were shown. But some scenes later I was only _wow_.
Oh, I forgot to vote. Gives me some additional lines...
One of the intros I want to see at scene.org-awards at breakpoint 2004 (bingen/easter/germany).
rulez added on the 2003-12-29 22:11:30 by René Madenmann René Madenmann
as creator of this intro i'd like to say,
* about the ATI - thing:
- i do NOT have an ati card, nor a PC where i could plug one in, just my notebook with a GF4mx.
but ATI-compatibility is definetly an issiue for the final version.

- about the "scary" music:
its excatly the way i wanted it. infact turned down the first two tracks from jco, but he was cool enough to do a 3rd one.
if you do not like it, OK. but dont say it does not fit the visuals.

Looks sweet but the only thing that makes this a 64K is the packer... It had to depack and precalc for ages on the bigscreen.

"Looks sweet but the only thing that makes this a 64K is the packer..."

And how has being retarded been working out for you, so far?
added on the 2003-12-29 22:54:33 by sagacity sagacity
well obviously without the packer it wouldn't have been 64k, now would it? :)
added on the 2003-12-29 22:56:29 by Gargaj Gargaj
One of the best 64k intros I've seen for a long time. It has an incredible atmosphere and while it doesn't follow a plot as such it does have a good sense of intrigue and certainly maintained my interest from start to finish.
rulez added on the 2003-12-29 23:07:29 by Wade Wade
i find it quite sad that the lighting don't cope up with the excelent textures and models. Very good code guys, but the rest is kind of... lacking. Next time, try to put in some more punch in order to impress more ;)
added on the 2003-12-29 23:14:07 by kusma kusma
well, to sum it up:

pros:
- admirable amount of work
- nice usage of the sound
- pretty damn solid transitions
- cool camerawork here and there
- nice idea to do something 'creepy' in general

cons:
- a fair share of very bland textures
- mostly non-impressive blocky looking models, for example the skyscrapers (besides, the lit windows in that 'city' aliased in an utmost horrible way) or the trees, or the machinery inside that power plant (<- ? i guess it was..)
- quite slow on my quite fast machine
- left me unsatisfied (a lack of action, allthough i guess that's quite subjective)

overall: still nothing that even comes close to for example fr-08 (to dig it up once again), let alone some other stuff released in the years after that. so i wonder why i'm supposed to be very impressed.

aaaargh! what is it with nvidia-only these days? i can only watch this on my crappy laptop.
however - a great 64k! good atmosphere, great graphics - and finally someone who does non-abstract textures in 64k! i´ve been waiting for this so long and especially that factory is really, really good.
only major minus is the uninspired office-scene which really doesn´t belong into this intro and destroys a lot of the dark feeling imho.

definately one of my favourite 64ks ever.
waiting for the patch :)

fiver2: some funny effects like in the screenshot here aside, it was, imho, was all looking too.. can't find the right word but.. how stuff looks when you don't really light it properly but just distribute equally contributing lightsources among a scene. i think 'dull' describes it :)

plek: interesting. i remember the factory lighting looked great. think i got to watch it again (patch! ;)...
added on the 2003-12-30 02:18:34 by fiver2^fB fiver2^fB
the factory did have slightly better lighting than the rest imo, so that could be true; besides that, on a bigscreen it probably looks much better due to the free 'fsaa'. besides all this i'd like to add once again that it's probably also quite a strong matter of taste, i personally like to see quite sharp contrasts -> that i missed.

Ok, sure, this got a very good compression ratio and all but to be honest. I don´t find the 3d-fly-by-static-no-action 64kb intros that amusing anymore. The only motion we see is based on the cameras movement and I wan't more action than that. Nice intro, Just a little "dead" I think!

It looks *very* german. couple of nice touches of detail here and there.

The only thing I didn't really like was the misbehaving textures for the greetings and city lights. They stood out like a sore thumb.

im still wondering what is the ultimate feature of the geforce1 in this that a radeon cant do... no thumbs down because i like the content, but people should really start to learn how to code. (what about dropping opengl and start using d3d's debug output? (most useful tool ever) :-))

abductee: then i should not have blamed the musician as much as your poor taste in music, my bad. :) don't misunderstand me - scary music was a good choice, it's just that it wasn't scary - just plain bad. (which is a shame really, since the music in the cityscape-part is actually very nice)
added on the 2003-12-30 23:28:17 by gloom gloom

rulez added on the 2003-12-31 00:40:00 by Zafio Zafio
Very very very nice! A great story, cool effects, great textures, spooky atmosphere. Has the same general sort of feel as Kasparov by Elitegroup imho.
I thought the music fit well (except for the lead in the citypart- would have liked a less 'chiptune'-like lead).
Since talk is cheap, I'll offer a few suggestions for the final:
*Do something about that loading time.
*Connect the armrests of the chair to the rest of the chair, at the very least.
*Could you at least make the ground under the buildings in the city black?
* Imho when you see the city at the end of the credits, the lights should be out... then you turn them all back on on the very last note. (okay, this is a silly one)

Oh, and plek, take a look at .the .product if you want to see really awful looking trees. These are way better.
rulez added on the 2003-12-31 03:08:23 by crusader crusader
i wouldn't overestimate it. it has been a lot of work, sure. but i don't see the point in generating all the same building&landscape thing out of it over and over. the production if syntactically far to simple. noise, and sinus and step .. and if you cant come up with a colorscheme you do it monochrome. and if you can't imagine a meaning you do a "watch it, there's something evil behind this noise-textured cube (and it even turned off my light!)"-story.
added on the 2003-12-31 11:29:25 by noize noize
that loading time was not half bad, just buy a decent pc ;) noize also has a point.

and even if the trees are way better (but still horrible), the intro isn't.
added on the 2003-12-31 11:43:59 by superplek superplek
noize: point taken. please take into count:
*we are a new group, this was our 1st relese
*the coders(aick and me) did all the graphics because we have no one for the gfx so far.

on one hand, there's nothing new here at all, it doesnt take the technical standard of 64ks forward or something like that.

however, it really is damn well polished.
its got a lot of nice little touches, e.g. like the alpha to blend in the reflections (many wouldnt have bothered), and the dusty effect on the "volumetric" beams. it just looks very polished and pretty.
the look of the thing is nice and coherent too. who cares if the colour scheme is a cop out, it looks great anyway. pretty good for codergfx =)

criticisms - the post filters and the city scene are both slower than they should be. also there's no animation except for cameras.

i'd love it if this was the last of the big fr08-esque industrial flyby intros - this is a good one to stop with. (any correllation between the number of industrial scenes in intros and the suitability of modelling them with primitives?). of course, it probably wont be, and we'll see another 10 copies that arent as good, but here's hoping anyway.

Wow. Very sinister and bleak atmosphere, helped by the soundtrack. I thought the city scene at the end was epic, and created a real sense of hyper-reality. This is always how I imagined the "Sprawl" from William Gibson's Neuromancer to look, but I never expected to see my imaginings in a 64k intro. hehe. Great work though, fantastic.

holy shit! first i read several comments and feared this was just a fr-08 follow-up but it turned out to be much more. not only technically impressive but moody in a ways 64k's rarely succeed in.

Technically impressive.
2 Things that bugged me though.
1st The slider setup thing for gamma etc, WAY to sentivite, so sensitive i couldn't even use it as it was just a waste of time.
2nd Didn't return my desktop back to it's original res so thx fuxup my icons :)

Apart from that, worked great on my OCd XP3200+ 9800XT
rulez added on the 2004-02-09 22:49:23 by Intrinsic Intrinsic
Wow again.
Intrinsic: I hadd no problems.
Gargaj: Why should s.o. watch this >>demo<< windowed? It deserves fullscreen.
I really love the atmosphere of this one. To sad that it is "only" a 64kb. Would be so nice to see more of those scenes, maybe with a storyline in a demo. Maybe next time ;) Keep up the good work, and thanks for the ATI Port. Nvidia only demos sux.

hey abductee... i ran the ati version, still there are a few minor glitches.. i think they occur because you use a quad or something ... there's one during the lamp scene and one right before 'we are demo' .. and one in the end as well ... nevertheless a nice intro codewise, not much content, but well shown..

Somehow manages to reset my machine (what aaare you doing to my poor radeon/live drivers?) during the city scene.. After having managed to make my radeon9800pro crawl for quite some time there..

Looked really promissing until then, exept the windows on the scyscrapes not really fitting their borders ;-)

The scenes were very nice, as was the texturing. However, my eyes were begging for some hint of colour. Monochrome can work, but in this case I think it wasn't the best choice. Maybe dull colouring would've been more acceptable, but certainly not bright, and not entirely b/w.

The music was interesting in concept, but overall failed to interest me. And I guess that is also how I feel about the intro: Interesting yet not compelling.

A weak thumbs up.

The final crashes badly on my computer. Right after setting the video mode to 1024x768, bang, application failure and that stuff :(. Tried the party release, with no hope (I have an ATI card), with the same crashing result.

Good music, too bad some visuals do not sufficiently support the athmosphere it is supposed to create.
The skyscraper scene looks very good but is definetely too slow and looks bad without antialiasing.
The factory scenes are also good, technically.

Make the ati final a real final:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/franck.charlet/PointBlank_ATI_Patch.zip

Put this patch in the same directory as the intro , run it and it'll create another file called: point_blank__ATi_Patched.exe

Voila.

Wow, now that's quite something! I don't know if it was your first 64k, but it must have been an insane amount of work, especially with that obvious care for details.

I'd have comments on points here and there, but I guess seven years make them irrelevant. :)

Hey this was a lot better than what I remembered from seeing it a couple years ago. Nice graphics in a consistent style, instant big plus. The direction is also quite good for the time especially, even though the cinematography makes me nauseous. Nice synth/sound, loved the music during the city flyby!

Great 64k. Never knew about this before and just found it when I noticed some fresh comments. Really quite cool direction and theme, as keito said it is sort of ahead of its time. If you took this exact same theme and maybe edited it down a bit and used all your modern rendering techniques this would sit very well with some recent 64k demos.

Since there is some discussion in these comments and also recently on the bbs about compatibility problems with windows prods, it is interesting that 13 years later this just straight up runs perfectly on windows 10 with literally week old hardware. Actually reading hear shows me how bad pouet comments used to be, almost like a youtube comments section. Some straight up ignorance and rudeness.
