Idea for a 2D demoscene platform game....

category: general [glöplog]
For some odd reason I just remembered a conversation I had with some of the UK sceners at the first Revision today around the idea of a 2D demoscene platform game.

You play Truck! (not a truck, THE truck). The mission is to get to the demo party, through the crowds and to the SceneSat booth in time for the live broadcast. You start the level at the train or bus station, make your way to the party, through the gates and through the party until you get to the SceneSat booth. Alone the way there would be obstacles and so on like, for example, other sceners. If you come into contact with another scene Truck starts talking! The only way to break the conversation is to waggle the joystick (old school!). You can prevent contact with a scener by whipping them with the towel drapped around his neck. You could pick up power-ups along the way like bottle of Arrogant Bastards beer which make you invincible to sceners for a small period.

Each level would be set at a different demo party location, Revision, Sundown (beach level!), Evoke, Datastorm, X, TRSAC etc. etc.

I suppose I'm mentioning it here because I can't code for shit, draw graphics or design levels. But if someone on here wanted an idea for some game dev... well there it is.

I like the idea, but wouldn't it make more sense in true Truck fashion to never get the game done?

Or.. maybe you could pick different characters and playing as Truck means it is impossible to complete it.

As long as it involves losing your passport in norway while being an american living in finland - i'd play that :)

why 2d platformer? needs more game. more kinds of it. look into revision mainhall from the beam team. it's an iso labyrinth with dynamic obstacles, if you do it right. ;)

Long Bathroom hall

8x8 tiles @ 3 colors each could even make an NES compatible RPG. We used Tiled Map Editor

Demoscene would be a nice topic for a management type game. Keep your coders productive by buying pizza + coke, but save enough money to outsource the art to india. Improve your rep by winning compos to attract better team members, but keep them away from pouet or they'll start group fights and waste time posting kittens. Bribe orgas to extend the deadline for your group and fix it for everyone else. All the usual scene activities...

Nice idea. But IMHO, a beat'em'up game would be the coolest :)

i like the idea to get some beer in order to get invincible...
maybe a level's goal could be to deliver a release to the orga-team. collecting disks (and i speak of 5 1/4) and throwing them at lamers would be acceptable, too, i think. and i would looking foreward to be a boss-enemy to be beaten by... whatever your imagination is up to :-) discuss, please !

You should also be able to play prince. Mission: Get into the basement and hang up posters with pins and gaffa tape without getting interrupted by the orga team.

My mission would be to finally deliver the bp2009 live footage to him. But well, that's like playing truck i guess :D

you're very welcome, indeed !
...and if someone likes to use my character... i've got some sprites done by my students ;-)

Nice idea for a game. Golden axe like character selection would be nice, maybe sich different quests. Findung buddies would be another quest, esp at huge parties with multiple rooms. Eg find the other coder due to a bug, or the graphician, etc.. Then there is the Hotel sceners - find them or have them find the party place late at night to deliver to the compo.

^ sorry for typos. Android kicked in. Also buying beer, making bonfires, impress others in a conversation at boozembly (monkey Island style), sleep and party at Droids place. And extra points for swapping the latest stuff with your available disks.

another activity : Go to party at the right time (arcade top down car racing game with helicopter view), pushing other cars (like in action fighter)
