• Solo: it's a fire effect on a circle. Black dark sun (where the telepathetic beings die). I like it too. I have seen a same effect in a c64 smash design demo although with smaller fire but I liked that part because it was like a real dark sun.

• Yes, the twister bars effect takes a bit too long.
  
  I think for the fast 3d it's the same concept as other effects (like the twister bars), having different lengths of rasterlines and chosing which to display in a line splitting mode or something. It looks big and smooth like hell for sure though.
