No Best Demo-Nomination for »Still / There«? WTF?!

What gaspode said.

(Congrats to all nominees though!)

I find your lack of 4k intro category disturbing...

For anyone thinking one sub-64k category would suffice - it obviously didn't.
We have two 4k's in Best Soundtrack and one in Best Direction, but that was not enough to compete with 64k's to even qualify into their own dedicated Best Intro category.

Also: Congratulations for all the nominees! :)

No, we're afraid it is only nominated for Best Soundtrack and Outstanding Concept, and another fantastic release of them, DRD5, made it onto the Best High-End Demo list (amongst other category nominations).

Don't get me wrong, our jurors don't "trade prods" amongst each other, every category is independently reviewed.
Selecting five out of a lot of fantastic productions is not an easy job, and I'm sure we can also all agree that the ones selected absolutely deserve their nominations as well.

Also: Very much looking forward to having you on the jury next year! :)

I don't mean to say that I expected a nomination, but I second KK's lament for the 4k intros (again).

Congratulations to all nonetheless. :)

@fizzer: Well, I was genuinely curious if "Before I Slumber" could keep against competition in its own category, as there were some really nice prods this year. :)
But after merger with 64k, all 4k's in the world totally flew under the radar.

So Amiga 500 is a "midschool" platform now, is it? Certainly didn't feel that way last time I touched it. ;-o

Holding out for the grade school category, where you need a PhD to make the demos.

i agree with there / still being much worthier of a best demo nomination then for example drd5. for me it was demo of the year.

about the high end intro being combined: it was discussed separating them but there were 2 main issues with it that i recall from the top of my head which led to this decision:
a) the 64k category would easily end up with as many nominations as there were releases in the year. in this particular year there were some very good quality despite not much quantity (64ks are always in sparse numbers these days).
b) trying to keep the number of categories below 12 to avoid the meteoriks being a too long show.

i do agree the 4k and 8k released this year could easily have made a category of their own. before i slumber was one of my favorite 4ks of the year and it definitely felt weird not seeing it nominated.

blueberry: we realize the line is not very easy to define in what is oldschool and what is midschool. as one of the jury members who tried to push for the separation of the lowend category into these 2, i hope it atleast feels a bit better then last year. but think positive: you can consider yourself not an old person for coding amiga, just mid :P

»Trying to keep the number of categories below 12 to avoid the meteoriks being a too long show.«

I think it would be better to risk a slightly longer show if you can have one or two more categories.

i agree with you on this particular case but there is always "just one more" category idea lurking around the corner, and so in that regard i can understand the main orgas decision to focus on keeping the show tight. at the end of the day it's always a juggle between people complaining about not enough categories and people complaining that show is too long.

If the scene started most of all with OCS Amiga, I don't know how that platform could be called anything else than oldskool. And if you now make a demo for PDP-1 is it an oldskool thing just because the platform itself is old? I don't think so. To avoid this kind of conceptual problems related to mixing scene history vs. technological history, I would maybe rather speak about low-end, mid-end platforms or something like this.
The low-end/mid-end name was discussed, and we worried that would have led to c64, zx, etc sceners being offended that their machines were being called weak...

There's no naming scheme that is going to keep everyone happy, but please remember that this is an attempt to recognize more of the productions been done with older platforms by adding an award.

(feel free to prove me wrong about perfect names for the categories)

I am tremendously offended by the stupidity of this argument.
@psenough: People who think the show is too long can ignore it. I understand that there cannot be infinitive awards, but it always seems there are only 1 or 2 missing.

There were times the scene.org awards were longer than an hour. People hated it. Also revision has a right af schedule as is, people really don’t want things to be longer than an hour. We always suffer with the first shader showdowns too. Most people leave after the first two matches (coincidentally that takes an hour) and keeping the hype up for an hour more is hard.

It didn't.

...yes? I'm not aware of a single demoparty with an oldschool compo that wouldn't put a PDP-1 demo in that category if it received one.

Last year the award was called "low-end", and this is a genuine argument that was made. This year we figured that people were going to make tedious arguments about it either way, so we decided to go with the name that's actually used in the demoscene rather than contriving to come up with a new one that people will still complain about. Congratulations for being this year's Person Making The Tedious Argument.

I didn't see anybody getting offended on that thread.

If this is the criterion, "midschool" shouldn't be there.
